Title: Walter LLOYD, Mary HOWELL and Elizabeth JENKINS of Llandybie and Llanon
Post by: garlands on Friday 06 October 17 15:01 BST (UK)
Walter LLOYD m Mary HOWELL on 5 Nov 1799 in Llandybie

On 30 May 1819, Mary LLOYD was bap in Llandybie, parents Walter LLOYD and Elizabeth JENKINS

Elizabeth JENKINS was bap on 22 Sep 1803 in Llanon, parents Jenkin LEWIS and Elizabeth (nee PRICE)

It appears that Mary LLOYD (nee HOWELL) was buried on 20 Jun 1820 in Llandybie i.e after her husband had fathered young Mary

Questions

1. Have I got the right people?

2. What became of young Elizabeth JENKINS? I can find no trace of her death or marriage.

3. Where, when and to whom was Walter LLOYD born?

Can anyone help, please?

Mary Howels was a widow when she married Walter Lloyd in Llandybie, 5 Nov 1799. She was otp, he was of Llandeilofawr. He signed, she marked, witnesses were John Williams & John Lloyd.

The Mary Lloyd who was buried in Llandybie in 1820 was aged 82, a pauper, and abode was Pentregwenly.

Possible burial in Betws for Walter Loyd aged 68 of Cross Inn, Llandybie  13 Oct 1828

His baptism may be 5 Dec 1764 in Llandeilo Fawr same day as his twin brother John, sons of Evan John Lloyd and his wife Mary, abode Trecastle.

There are other Walter Lloyds in the area who could be the father of Mary.
There's a burial in Llandeilo Fawr 25 Sept 1821 for Walter Lloyd aged 29 of Nantyrheibo in the Villa Hamlet. Also buried on the same day, William Lloyd aged 31 of the same address. baptisms for both in Llandeilo Fawr sons of Willia & Mary Lloyd of Nantyrhybo, William bp 9 Feb 1790, Walter bp 8 Jun 1792.

Given that Walter & Mary had daughters baptised in Llandybie between 1801 & 1806, the Mary buried in 1820 cannot be the same one as she would have been too old. Surname recorded as Llwyd.

Elizabeth bp 6 Jan 1801
Mary bp 31 May 1802
Anne bp 18 May 1806 aged 5 days abode Park y rhin?

Thanks.

The record in FreeReg does not give an age for the deceased. By my reckoning, Mary (nee HOWELLS) would have been about 42 in 1820 - how old was the deceased? Anyway, I'm glad she was not Walter LLOYD's wife, but if she was dead before Mary's birth in 1819, where is the record of her burial?

Hi Osprey,

As I said last night, I missed your first posting, for which many thanks. It contains lots of useful information.

I didn't know that Mary HOWELLS was a widow otp. Fortunately, she's not my ancestor, so I wont have to bother too much about her antecedents. The news about Walter LLOYD being from Llandeilofawr is of much greater interest as I have been looking for him in Llandybie. I had found his burial in Llandybie and that, together with his marriage led me to assume it was his birthplace. Thanks for the details of his (and his twin's) baptisms.

However, you've thrown a spanner into the works with your younger Walter (bp 1792). Isn't this younger man more likely to have had a dalliance with young Elizabeth JENKINS then his elder namesake?. Whichever, why was there no marriage between Elizabeth and Walter? Did she die, in which case where and when? Did she marry someone else at a later date? I've explored these possibilities and have found no trace of her. I need to do more thinking and researching.

Thanks again

George

being of Llandeilo Fawr didn't mean he was born there, just had been living there at the time of his marriage.

I would have thought the younger Walter was the more likely father, but there could be other Walters around as well.

When was the burial you found for Walter in Llandybie? I found a possible in Betws but didn't spot the other one.

that's the same burial I was looking at, I think. October 13 1828 aged 68 address Cross Inn Llandybie but the burial is actually in Betws parish records. Also transcribed on FreeReg.

Yes, I picked it up on FreeReg, but did not get the age at death. If he was in fact 68 it puts his DoB back to 1760 and makes him 39 at the time of the marriage to Mary HOWELLS. The picture is even cloudier!
The important question for me is:-

which Walter LLOYD is the father of Mary (30 May 1819)?

I thought I knew the answer. Now, I'm not so sure
