Title: Looking for burials for Sarah Frances Reeves & her husband James Dansey Reeves
Post by: Westy11 on Saturday 07 October 17 10:41 BST (UK)
Not getting much traction in location the burials of Sarah Frances Reeves nee Lyons & her husband James Dansey/Dunsey Reeves.

As per the QLD BDM electoral rolls Sarah's death was registered in 1984.  The 1980 Electoral Roll has Sarah & her husband, a salesman living at 24 Maryvale St Townsville.

I am unable to locate James death nor a burial and actually I am not getting much traction on them as a family. According to their marriage certificate James was born about 1896 in Penge, Kent, England and as yet I have not located his birth.

All assistance gratefully received.

Hello Gerry,

Thanks so much and rather interesting.

I am wondering if James Dansey Reeves age is correct and perhaps he is a son named after his father?  The record notes:

James Dansey REEVES, 62.
Buried, 3rd September 1992.

This would mean this James was born in 1930. James & Sarah were married in 1923 so this must be a son??

The person:

James George REEVES, 71.
Buried, 21st July 1967.

Would have been born about 1896 which lines up with what I know about James Dansey Reeves.

Your thoughts?

What other Reeves are buried there???  Does it give any indication of a relationship to Sarah & her husband??

Hi,
If you would be kind enough to use upper case when a surname is typed, it would always be a help in a clear reading of your posts. ;D

It is the "usual way" in the forum.

Was the woman Norah (Honoria) ESTER or was she Norah (Honoria) Ester  SURNAME or was she Norah (Honoria) Ester O'DONAHUE?

I do not have access to the 1939 register, but the glimpse I can see shows both Ethel and William A REEVES at Penge. So his death has come after that year.

What do you believe was the man's correct name?

Hi westy....

William Alfred Reeves married Elizabeth Emma Chalf in 1889 St Saviour district

Tazzie

This is correct with the additional and fuller information-
December quarter
Vol 1d page 103

Father and Mothers Names:
William Albert Reeves
Ethel Warden

For your interest the mother's maiden name on all three births of the sons is CHALF.

Do you need the details?

Hi Sue,

According to the marriage certificate the father was William Albert.

Yes I would appreciate the information for the 3 boys.

Interesting in the 1911 census William & Ethel said they had no children.

Archive reference: RG14; Registration district: Croydon; Registration district number: 39 Enumeration district: 9: District number: 9; Sub district: Penge; Sub district number: 5; Census reference: RG14PN3413 RG78PN128 RD39 SD5 ED9 SN81; RG78 code number: 128; Piece number: 3413

The address was the same as the 1901 and also the death and Probate you have kindly provided.

Your thoughts?

That is because they did not have children.
The column heading is "children born alive to the present marriage"

There were none.
The children were born to Elizabeth CHALF.

Sue thanks so much. :)

You have successfully pulled me back from the brink of a big mistake and reaffirmed for me I should put everything away and go and clear my head. ;D

Family History is not the place to make mistakes due to muddy thinking. :'(

I think this is your REEVES family -

At All Saints Church Newington Surrey marriage 25 Dec 1889
REEVES William Alfred , 23 yrs, bachelor, labourer, father William Alfred, contractor
9 Arthur Road Beckenham

CHALF Elizabeth 21 yrs, spinster, father William, cook.
7 Chilton St

Witnesses James CONNER, Emma Emily JACKSON.

Census 1891 at 29 Thessigar (??) Rd Beckenham
REEVES William, head,   24yrs general labourer b. Penge Surrey
REEVES Elizabeth, wife,  22 yrs  b. Poplar London
JACKSON Harriet, cousin,   19yrs  general servant, b. Limehouse.

The JACKSON connection suggested here should be with the REEVES family, but people were often more inclusive with family description, so Harriet might be a cousin to Elizabeth.

The mother of ELizabeth CHALF (nee JONES) died in 1880

Dec 1880

CHALF  Elizabeth
Aged  37
At  Poplar  1c/ 462

It is not relevant to your query, but briefly, it appears that her widowed husband William Samuel CHALF, may have taken up residency in USA in later life.
He was a ship's steward and can be seen travelling at least once to Australia ;D

The burial of Elizabeth, his wife is listed on Tower Hamlets Cemetery Register.
Other family members occupy the private grave also.

The writing is very difficult, but I will try to list their names. May be quite incorrect.
James George JONES
James W. FOWLER
Elizabeth DENNIS
Elizabeth JONES
? A STUTT

ADDING
I do not think any of the interred here are the missing Elizabeth REEVES.

Thanks so much Sue.

It all becomes relevant.  For example its possible James George was named after James George JONES.

Much appreciated Sue.

Just revisited this thread to find it's moved back into my area. From some Electoral Rolls for 57 Arpley Rd:

1939-51: Ethel Emily & William Albert REEVES
1952-55: Ethel Emily REEVES and F D & N V D*
1956-57: F D & N V D and R P C & S M C*

* just giving initials as we're moving into possible living people territory. If these suggest relatives, I'll PM the full names.

The above confirm Ethel's death in 1955 and suggest William died between November 1950 and November 1951 (qualifying dates for 1951 & 1952 ERs). I can't see mention of his dob above, so hard to identify him on FreeBMD. The most likely burial place is Beckenham Crematorium & Cemetery, but I don't seem to have come across a Reeves grave, not that I've recorded all of them!

Other Jottings:

a) It's Thesiger Road. No 29 was a general shop, maybe with a flat above. Almost all the houses/shops were flattened in WW2 bombing.

b) Arthur Road was renamed Churchfields Road in 1907. No 9 suffered the same fate.

c) Arpley Road fell victim to post-war town planners and no longer exists. It had an interesting and somewhat colourful history.

d) I don't see any names from the above at St John's Cottages around 1955, and can't suggest why Ethel died there.

If the above looks promising, I'll see what else I can find.
