Hi
Can anyone tell me if there are any parish records available for Newbury for the start to the middle of the 1800's and if so where I may be able to find them?
I am searching for records of a Rowles family who according to census records came from Newbury but I can't find any information from this time.
Kind Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
Newbury library have a copy of the parish records for St Nicolas Church Newbury and some records for other parishes near Newbury. The Berkshire Records Office (in Reading) also hold the parish records for Berkshire.
Which Rowles family are you researching?
Kind regards
Chris

Hi Chris
I am looking for William Rowles born about 1808/1811 n Newbury. He married Ann Ferris in 1830 in Newbury and his occupation was a dyer and cleaner.
I have found a William and Mary Ann Rowles on the 1851 & 1861 census's living in Newbury. He was born about 1783/1786 in Witney, Oxfordshire and his occupation is also a dyer. I was trying to check if these were William's parents.
There is also a John/John Adam Rowles born about 1819 in Newbury with wife Sarah (possibly Noakes) on the census records and also Joseph Adam Rowles born about 1820 in Newbury with wife Maria. Both John & Joseph's occupations are also dyers/cleaners. Could these be sons of Wlliam and Mary Ann and brothers of William (1808)?
If these are the same family I would like to find out about children of William and Mary Ann, births, marraiges etc.
Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
A little info for you:
Baptisms 1799-1812
Place: St Nicolas Church Newbury
Date: 10th January 1808
Name: William Rowles (born 18th December 1807)
Parents: William and Mary Ann Rowles
Place: St Nicolas Church Newbury
Date: 5th February 1809
Name: Mary Ann Rowles (born 19th December 1808)
Parents: William and Mary Ann Rowles
As William, Mary Ann and their family were not recorded in the 1815 Joseph Toomers census it looks like they moved out of the parish sometime after 1809 but they must have moved back to this parish by 1817 because they had the following children baptised there.
Baptisms:
Date: 29th June 1817
Name: Matilda Rowles
Parents: William and Mary Ann Rowles
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Silk Dyer
Date: 4th April 1819
Name: John Adams Rowles
Parents: William and Mary Ann Rowles
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Dyer
Date: 4th March 1821
Name: Joseph Adams Rowles
Parents; William and Mary Ann Rowles
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Dyer
Date: 5th February 1826
Name: Thomas Benjamin Rowles
Parents: William and Mary Ann Rowles Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Dyer
Date: 22nd February 1829
Name: Emily Rowles
Parents: William and Mary Rowles
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Dyer
Date: 24th April 1831
Name: Maria Rowles
Parents: William and Mary Ann Rowles
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Dyer
I could only find 2 marriages for the children in the parish records for St Nicolas Church
Date: 19th October 1830
Marriage: By Banns
Groom: William Rowles (Bachelor of this parish)
Bride: Ann Ferris (Spinster of this parish)
Groom signed his name, Bride made her mark
Witnesses: Elizabeth Rowles and John Edward Knight
Date: 12th July 1841
Groom: Joseph Adams Rowles, aged 20and a 1/2, Bachelor, of Newbury, occ: Confectioner
Bride: Maria Hopson aged 15 and a 1/2, Spinster, of |Newbury
Groom's Father: William Rowles, Occ: Dyer
Bride's Father: Willam Hopson, Occ: Bricklayer
Bride and Groom both signed their names
Witnesses: John Adams Rowles and Esther Hopson
This looks like the baptism for Maria Hopson:
Date: 21st November 1825
Name: Maria Hopson
Parents: William and Sarah Hopson
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ: Publican and Bricklayer
This couple also baptised this daughter:
Date: 30th May 1824
Name: Esther Hopson
Parents: William and Sarah Hopson
Abode: Newbury
Father's Occ; Bricklayer
I think that John Adams Rowles married this Esther Hopson in the same quarter and year that Maria and Joseph were married but as they were not married in the parish of St Nicolas I have no proof.
to be continued:

Familysearch has John and his family recorded in the 1861 census as follows:

Son: John B T aged 13 born Reading
Dau: Edith M aged 6 born Windsor
Son: Walter Odaver aged 5 born Windsor
Dau: Fanny G aged 0 born Windsor
Maria Noakes aged 74 born Cookham Berkshire
Looking for the birth registrations for the above children I have found these:
ROWLES, ESTHER mother's maiden name HOPSON
GRO Reference: 1842 D Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 197
ROWLES, JOHN BRICE mother's maiden name HOPSON
GRO Reference: 1848 J Quarter in READING Volume 06 Page 243

ROWLES, GERTRUDE FANNY mother's maiden name WILLIS

There was this death which could be Esther Rowles mistranscribed as Hester:
ROWLES, HESTER aged 24
GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in READING Volume 06 Page 170
and this possible 2nd marriage for John Adams Rowles:
Marriages Jun 1853
Giles Mary Ann Newbury 2c 355
Moulding Sarah Newbury 2c 355 <<<<<<
Pocock Thomas Newbury 2c 355
ROWLES John Adams Newbury 2c 355 <<<<<<<
Tracing Sarah back there is this possible marriage:
Marriages Dec 1848
Challis Livinia Newbury 6 449
CLACK Charlotte Newbury 6 449
Cooper John Newbury 6 449
CRUSE Ann Newbury 6 449
MOULDING John Newbury 6 449 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Slaughter George Newbury 6 449
WILLIS Sarah Newbury 6 449 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
WRIGHT John Newbury 6 449
son for this couple:
MOULDING, WILLIAM HENRY mother's maiden name WILLIS
GRO Reference: 1850 M Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 235
Death for Sarah's husband John:
MOULDING, JOHN Aged 24
GRO Reference: 1850 J Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 152
1851 census:
Abode: St Nicolas Newbury Berkshire
Sarah Moulding, aged 25, Widow, born Greenham Berkshire
William H Moulding aged 1 born Newbury
As the 1861 census doesn't actually state what relationship Maria Noakes was to John Adams Rowles but assuming that she was Sarah's mother perhaps John registered the birth of Walter in 1856 thinking that Sarah's maiden name was Noakes and not Wiiis
It's possible that Thomas Benjamin Rowles married in 1848:
Marriages Dec 1848
CROOK William Totnes 9 605
DOLTON Eliza Totnes 9 605
Fogwill Eleanor Totnes 9 605
HOLMAN James Totnes 9 605
LIZARD Harriet Totnes 9 605 <<<<<<<<<<<<<
Rowles Thomas Benjamin Totnes 9 605 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
possible birth for a daughter;
ROWLES, CAROLINE LIZARD mother's maiden name LIZARD
GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 207
and it looks like Thomas emigrated to Australia as this looks like a second marriage for him:
Thomas Benjamin Rowles
Birth Date:1827
Birthplace: Newbury, Bucks, England
Age: 56
Spouse's Name: Mary Ann Dobbs
Spouse's Birth Date:1829
Spouse's Birthplace: Sondon, England

William Rowles died in 1858 aged 75 and Mary Ann Rowles died in 1859 aged 73.
Ann Rowles died in 1877 aged 69 and William Rowles died in 1884 aged 76

Hi Chris
I have been gong through the info you gave me and I do have one query at the moment. Do you recollect coming across a Sophia Rowles?
On the 1841 census for William and Mary Ann Rowles there is also 2 children mentioned. John (Probably John Adam) aged 20, Maria aged 10 and Sophia aged 15 who I assumed was a daughter.
I think she married Henry Tomkins in 1847 and depending which census you look at she was born about 1824/1825 in Newbury. If she wasn't baptised then there would be no record, but she could be another relative and not a daughter.
I was wondering if you had come across her.
Regards
Lesley

Hi Lesley,
I didn't see a baptism for Sophia but I can tell you that when Sophia married her father was recorded as William Rowles and his occupation was Dyer, so it looks like she was William and Mary Ann's daughter.
Kind regards

Hi Chris
Thanks for the info. I'm still working through the previous details you sent.
I did find a BMD marriage record on Ancestry for John Adams Rowles and Esther Hopson for the 3rd quarter of 1841 in Newbury District. That ties up with your idea that he married in the same year as Joseph & Maria.
The 1861 census you mentioned for John and his family which shows Maria Noakes. The transcript has Maria as his mother in law, but on the previous census in 1851 she is listed as Maria Willis, mother of Sarah Moulding (widow). Not sure where the name Noakes came from, perhaps that was her maiden name.
Ayway it is interesting trying to sort things out.
Kind Regards
Lesley
