id go with the birth certificate, given that her parents were around to confirm/deny the facts.
does she have any siblings to do a comparison on parents at birth/marriage/death?
-
Thanks for that, I do indeed have names for siblings and hadn't thought to check their death certificates. Many thanks.

I wonder why the informant gave the wrong information about her parents though? What does her marriage certificate say, as the only other solution would be that you have the wrong marriage/children.

The birth information is not from a birth certificate. It is from the OPR's,many of which have not survived. I would, therefore, be more inclined to go with the information on the death cert. As suggested above the best thing to do is to obtain the 1859 marriage cert.

Many thanks to you all, I have the wrong birth certificate somehow. Her parents were
James Brock cotton weaver
Marjory Brock maiden name fletcher
I did wonder when I saw that the eldest daughter's name was Marjory.
Onwards.

A Marjory Brock or Fletcher died in Hamilton in 1872 age 72. Also possible marriage between James Brock and Menie Fletcher 1832 in Hamilton.

Think that Jane has been transcribed as Jean in the 1841 census - likely parents transcribed as James Brock and Meady Fletcher.1851 she is with parents in Hamilton -mother here transcribed as Mary (note it says she was born in Edinburgh).1861 mother transcribed as Margaret and 1871, now a widow , she is showing as Margary.

The name Marjorie or Margery orginated as a diminutive of Margaret. See http://www.whatsinaname.net/
It is sometimes abbreviated to May, and May also occurs as a variant of Mary.
All very confusing!
