Title: Andrew Graham Henderson
Post by: Cramond Brig on Tuesday 10 October 17 15:04 BST (UK)
Andrew Graham Henderson was born on 21 August 1882 at Auckland, New Zealand. His parents were William Nisbet Henderson, a Draper and Commission Agent, and Elizabeth Black Henderson (nee Graham). The family returned to Scotland in 1891. For completeness, I would like to find the names of his siblings, whose initials were R. S., W. B. and J. (I think, Jane or Jean), and where they lived in Scotland after their return.

I see a record of the marriage of William Nisbet Henderson and Eliza Graham in 1878 in New Zealand. It looks as if his first wife died?

Death of Jessie Jardine Henderson in Govan 1873.

Newspaper index suggests a sequestration for a William Nisbet Henderson in 1874.

Thank you. That really clears it up. Death of wife and sequestration must have led to emigration to New Zealand. I saw the 1891 census and the initials led me to ask the question.

He worked for Charles Rennie McIntosh - wow!    That's really something!

...There is a Valuation Roll for Andrew G Henderson at Tassie Street, Eastwood, for 1905, where it gives his occupation as an Architect.       He is also at this address on the Glasgow Electoral Registers  from 1905 to 1910.      Unfortunately, only the head of the house is given on these.

However, on Scotlands People, there is the following for 1911
Census 1911  60 Kirkcaldy Road, Titwood, Pollockshields
Andrew G Henderson, 28, Architectural Draughtsman, born New Zealand
Jeanie M Henderson, 30, sister, born New Zealand

Both are unmarried.    I am pretty certain the Andrew G at Tassie St is the same one who is living at Kirkcaldy Road, because Andrew G is no longer to be found at Tassie St after 1910, and then he suddenly appears at Kirkcaldy Rd the next year.     In fact, Andrew is still at Kirkcaldy Road in 1915.

P.S.    Kirkcaldy Road and Tassie St are quite close to each other.

On Scotlands People, William Nisbet Henderson died at Eastwood in 1901, aged 66.   There are a couple of promising looking deaths, one of which might be Elizabeth, his wife.

Elizabeth Henderson, aged 83, died in 1929 at Kilmacolm.
Elizabeth Black Henderson, aged 54, died in 1901 at Eastwood.

There is a William B Henderson, aged 30, on the 1911 census, living at Scotstoun & Yoker, Lanarkshire.  I suspect the B may stand for Boyd.

You have a W.B. Henderson, born 1873, on the 1891 census.  And there is a William Boyd Henderson born 1872 at Govan Church, so this looks like there is a realistic chance that this is the same person who is W.B. on the 1891 census.

There was also a Robert Smith Henderson, who, like W.B. Henderson above, was also born in   at Govan Church.     He was born in 1871.     ...I don't remember seeing the Govan Church place-name being used very often, and suspect that because of this, William Boyd Henderson and Robert Smith Henderson may be from the same family.

So it could be that Robert Smith Henderson and William Boyd Henderson are on the 1891 census as R.S. Henderson and W.B. Henderson and are brothers.

Re William B Henderson I do not think he was in Glasgow in 1911 - suggest you look at the 1911 census for England. There is also a possible death for  him in Hendon in 1915.

William

Robert Smith Henderson was born 1 Jan 1871 at Govan.     Parents: William Nisbet Henderson & Jessie Jardine Boyd.      I think the following is his probate record .....

"Robert Smith Henderson of 24 Claddens St, Glasgow N died 19 Apr 1942.     Confirmation of Evelyn Margaret Henderson or Nisbet.      Sealed Llandudno 13 Aug."

A lot of records were stored at Llandudno during WW2, apparently to keep them safe from the bombing.

P.S.     Correction  - This Probate is NOT for Robert Smith Henderson.      This is someone else with the same name.

Nor is it a grant of probate. There is no such thing as probate in Scots Law. The corresponding procedure in Scotland is Confirmation, and in this case the fact that it was 'sealed' at Llandudno shows that it was processed in Scotland. There was an agreement that an English or Welsh or Irish probate could be 'sealed' in Scotland to avoid the need to go through the whole process of confirmation in the Scottish courts as well, and likewise a confirmation in Scotland could be 'sealed' in ad English, Welsh or Irish court.
