Title: Lennon Family Research from Manchester
Post by: Patchy on Wednesday 11 October 17 05:50 BST (UK)
What a headache my Lennon family have been. I enter Lennon from Manchester, Liverpool and am flooded with Beatlemainia, not related (I don't think). My Matthew Lennon had brothers James and William and possibly a sister Catherine. The Lennon father of this lot was William and mother Rose or Rosanna. A well educated family as Matthew was a clerk and William a solicitor, their father documented as a merchant on William's death certificate. Matthew was married to Sarah Ann Davies. I have a marriage for them in St Mary, Manchester, Lancashire 1834. My problem is finding anything more on William and Rose/Rosanna Lennon back in Manchester. Any help and direction would be greatly received.   ::) ???

Have you found all the different family members in 1841, 1851 etc and have you approximate birth dates for them - a little more information would help?

Where have you looked for them - any Manchester local sites?

Do you know if they were originally from Ireland, and did some of this immediate family move, live and die in Australia?

There is a Catholic baptism for a Mathew Lennon, son of William and Rosanna, at St. Mary's, Liverpool on 24 Nov 1811.  Do you know if Mathew was the oldest child, so we can zone in on a time frame for the marriage of his parents?

There is a Catholic baptism for a Lara Lennon on 6 Apr 1821, born the day before, at St Nicholas, Liverpool.  It is written in latin, so I'm struggling with that, and the handwriting.  The father is listed as Guilliam (or something like that.... is that latin for William?)  The mother is Rosanna Fayer? Fagan?

No Matthew was not the oldest child. From what I have so far:
James Leonard born abt. 1810
Matthew 1811
Catharine 1814
William James abt. 1818.

There could possibly be other siblings but not discovered as yet.

Not sure if family migrated from Ireland. I have searched Irish records available on line but nothing familiar.
Children of James Leonard Lennon and Ellen Redhead came to Australia after the death of their father. William, Ellen and Johnathan, came to live with Uncle William and both boys worked in law.

I have searched all I can find available on the internet for Manchester.

I think Guilliam is William but not sure. This is close although Lara would have to be the youngest if a sibling.

I have the details for Catharine and her death in Sydney as she died a spinster and her niece, one of Matthew's children, cared for her before her death.
I have a female Lennon (Mary) who sailed out with Matthew and family on the "Sir John Beresford" 1848 and wonder if this could have been Sara or Lara?

James L Lennon died 22 August 1849.
Yes the above children are of James and Ellen. There is also a William, Ellen and Alice.
Jonathan J., William and Ellen all came to Australia while Alice went to America and married a Tangney.
Poor Jonathan Joseph had a tragic death. He was a solicitor in Tamworth when he was reported to have suicide but on reading what came before his death I feel he was in terrible pain and out of his mind.
