Hi there,
I'm looking for a Halcrow/Halcro family in NZ who has an ancestor by the name of Erskine from Scotland. In particular a HENRY ERSKINE and his two sons EBENEZER & RALPH. Their mother was MARGARET HALCROW from the small Island of Wyre, Orkney and born about 1647.
It maybe of course that someone with a different surname has an Erskine ancestor ?
There was a lady, with the surname Halcrow, living in Te Aroha years ago who was related but that's all I know.
Here's hoping,

Just wondering why you have posted on London & Middlesex board :-\

Because I'm an idiot. I thought I was using NZ Rootschat. Must cancel it now. Thanks for getting back to me so quick. MAPS

Please someone tell me how to cancel the Halcrow post that I've just posted on the London board. I should have put it on the NZ board.

Hugh ERSKINE (who wed Agnes Mary ARMSTRONG in 1883) was also born in County Down, Ireland.

MAPS ... the man Hugh ERSKINE for whom records are being published in this thread, appears not to have an immediate connection to the Margaret HALCROW you speak of.
[This Hugh ERSKINE did however have sons named Ebenezer ERSKINE and Ralph Martin ERSKINE but the mother of these children was the aforementioned Agnes Mary nee ARMSTRONG.]
At the link below is the Probate record for this Hugh ERSKINE ... and at Image 731 there is a statement attesting to the fact that he was born at Lisburn, Ireland.

The year of 1647 may indeed have been the year MAPS meant........

Wow, I never expected a reaction like this !
Thank you all very much for all your searches.
Minniehaha you have found the original Ebenezer. I think I owe you all an explanation for my original message.
My 3x great grandfather GEORGE MAINLAND married a MARY HALCROW in London in 1810. This Mary Halcrow is believed, by my Mainland family, to be the uncountable times great grandaughter of MARGARET HALCRO (1647) see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Halcro-3
I am hoping to be able to fill in the descendants between MARY and MARGARET but no luck so far.
I know about the Erskine Genealogy book online but it's no help it's more about the Erskines than the Halcros. My Mainland family originate fro m Orkney as well and believe it or not from the very same Island (Wyre) where Margaret was born !
If you know the story about how MARGARET was buried alive then you'll know about "The Ring". Many years ago my cousin was sent a picture of this RING by a lady from Te Aroha who was either a Halcrow or an Erskine descendant ??
I was trying to track down this person or family hence my message.
Thanks again everybody. MAPS

Maps, a book for you, "The Little General & the Rousay Crofters!" Thomson. Wyre was part of the Rousay estate which was bought by the wee carnaptious General Burroughs & treated the islanders as if he was back in India! Amazon.

Thanks Skoosh an excellent tip. I do know of the book ,in fact I saw it in Rousay where we stayed there a few years ago but then I promptly forgot about it. I will get hold of it one way or another.

You could also try members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists [NZSG ] who have an interest in the names HALCRO/HALCROW and ERSKINE.
Here's a link, with a form to complete to establish contact with the member(s)
