Can anyone look up the birth of Alonzo Wesson for me - the GRO is 1868 Q3 Leicester 07b 258, to see who his mother is :P
I know there is no MMN and I suspect he is the child of Mary (Ann) Wesson of Nottingham. She had another Alonzo in 1861, born in the workhouse in Nottingham. The 1868 Alonzo enlisted in Leicester and eventually married Elizabeth Mary Lane in 1898. He was killed in an accident as the flagman to a Corporation traction engine in Nottingham in 1908. He too had a son Alonzo, born in 1903, who was then brought up in a Nottingham boy's home

He is with his Wesson grandparents in 1861 in Nottingham.

Birth records can't be "looked up" - to find out more than you already know about the birth, you'd need to use the index details to order the birth certificate. Has Alonzo b 1868 been found in 1871/1881?
What became of Mary Ann - do you know?
I see that on Alonzo's 1888 attestation he is living at the address of a Mrs E Hopewell, 18 Castle Terrace, Castle Row, Nottingham. Has she been traced?
-
Furthermore, in his 1889-1902 Army record he named his NOK as his sister, Ellen Hart of Nottingham.
Ellen's address when first entered was 5 Queen's Grove, Queen's Walk, Nottingham.
It was later updated to: 17 Trent Bridge Footway, London Rd, Nottingham.
His name was spelt Alonza in the Army records (including in his signature).

Ellen Hart (29, married, dressmaker, born Nottingham) appears in 1891 at 17 Trent Bridge Footway.
She has with her a boarder, Hetty Chambers, but no husband.
-
William HART & Ellen Letitia WESTON (as indexed) are on the same page of marriages in Nottingham, Jun qtr 1877.
-
She was registered at birth as Ellen Letitia Weston (Jun qtr 1858 Nottingham) but appears in 1861 as Ellen L Wesson, 3, a granddaughter of Thomas and Hannah Wesson in the same household as the 1861-born Alonzo.

I've got some records for Leicester and Leicestershire births, but not for Alonzo. I don't know which church his birth was registered at :(
I can track him after that, and his sister (birth GRO also with no MMN). He is on 1871(I think) as "Orlando" Weston in Nottingham and Mary says she is a widow ::) "Ellin" is listed - more likely the Ellen Letitia nominated as his sister, NoK on his service papers
I would just like to confirm his mother as part of my Wesson/Weston line
-
Birth registration is nothing to do with churches :)
Perhaps what you are really looking for is a baptism. Failing that, you will need to order the birth certificate in the usual way.
Did this Mary Ann Wesson marry in Nottingham in 1872, to William Birch or George Slater? Has the family been found in 1881?
-
From the Notts baptism disc, Thomas and Hannah Weston or Wesson baptised the following children in Nottingham St Mary (the first two) and Notts St Peter (the rest)
1832 04 09 Alonzo (this Alonzo died in 1848)
1833 10 22 Maria
1836 08 10 Mary Ann
1839 05 01 Elizabeth
1841 10 03 Thomas
1843 11 05 Joseph
1846 02 01 Catherine
1848 03 15 John
I can't see any baptisms in Nott for Ellen or for a younger Alonzo, but since Thomas and Hannah had a daughter Mary Ann, clearly that's a possibility for their mother.
There are 2 marriages in Nottingham in the relevant time period for Mary Ann Wesson, both at Nott St Mary; either (or neither) could be Thomas and Hannah's daughter:
27.5.1863 Edward Baldock and Mary Ann Wesson
4.11.1872 William Birch and Mary Ann Wesson
I can't see any baptisms in Notts for any children of either of these two couples.

He is with his Wesson grandparents in 1861 in Nottingham.

this can't be the Alonzo that the OP wants to check, as he was born in 1868
-
Thanks for the info, but I have all of Thomas and Hannah's children from the NFHS disks. The 1861 census has four grandchildren. Alonzo was born in a Nottingham workhouse in 1861 and died before his first birthday. Ellen Letitia survived to adulthood and married. Arthur, b abt 1859, does not appear to have his birth registered, but he also lived to adulthood. I can't trace a Mary E Wesson, another of Mary Ann's brood?
Mary Ann certainly had a fixation with the name Alonzo, with another a few years later, or rather that's what I want to prove. If she is the mother, why did she give birth in Leicester?
As Mary was on the 1871 census (as Weston), if she did marry, it was after that. She has a Samuel as a son too, another brick wall. I've tried following the Birch marriage but drawn a blank ??? I do wonder who she would marry in her circumstances.
It doesn't help that this branch of the family is mainly Wesson but Weston is often recorded
-
The only thing I can add so far is in the newspaper, Edward Baldock is said to be marrying Mrs Mary Ann Wesson.
Do you have any of the marriages as I could probably look them up next week if it is any help.
So far noted
William Hart 1877 St Paul
Edward Baldock 1863 St Mary
William Birch 1872 St Mary

OOh MMN is Wesson for Percy Birch born in 1875 :D
Easy for Birch to be Beech

Having used the GRO trial for .pdf files instead of paper, Alonzo Wesson was registered on 28 June 1868, mother Mary Ann Wesson, in the Union Workhouse, St Margarets.
I've no idea how or why a Nottingham mother ended up at Leicester though
