Title: Mary Macisaac from Buninver in 1871 b ca 1866/7
Post by: Tjapaltjarri on Friday 13 October 17 15:42 BST (UK)
Here's a problem that has taxed my sleuthing skills for some years.

I have been trying to find out what happenned to this lady:-

She was Mary Macisaac daughter of Angus Macisaac ( a cotter) and Catherine Macintyre who married in Bornish in 1857.

On the 1871 census Mary aged 4 years is living with her widowed mother and older sister Catherine (7) in Buninver.

I have searched high and low for a marriage or death for Mary without success.

Her sister Catherine married Ronald Mackenzie in Bornish in 1893 and it was they who bought up Mary Macisaac's daughter, so the likelihood is that Mary died as the daughter is with her aunt and uncle in 1911.

If anybody can shed light on this mystery I should be very delighted.

With many thanks,

Howdie

Yes, I have the census up to 1901 and I don't need to know anything about her daughter. It's just that she simply seems to disappear.

Is it possible that Mary changed her name to MacKenzie at some point? She was living with the MacKenzies and could have been adopted by them.

I think Mary (21) was with her mother Catherine (70) W (Cottars Widow) in 1891 at Buninver.

Annie,

The last record I can see now is the one cited above at Buninver in 1891.

The marriage cert gives both of Mary's daughter's parents as deceased. Mother variously given as Mary Macisaac and Mary Macdonald. This is a sensitive area for the family and I do not need to know about Mary Macisaac's daughter.

I could not find a corresponding death for a Mary Macdonald b 1866/7 mmn Macintyre.

So Mary was last seen in 1891 but when was the earliest marriage of a dau with Mary being deceased to give us a window?

Who was the informant on the mother Catherine's death & when?

I could not find a corresponding death for a Mary Macdonald b 1866/7 mmn Macintyre.

Not all deaths give the mother's m/s on the index.

If she was known by both surnames they should both be on SP index unless the informant of her death didn't know that info.

Howard,

There are 3 births in Howmore & Benbecula 1864 - 1868 (although I didn't choose a specific area)

There are none in Boisdale (same period)

1 death from 1891 - 1965 Uist/Benbecula with birth year 1864 - 1868 (Ditto above)

That '1' is in Boisdale but there are none in Howmore or Benbecula  ???

Have you looked at that '1'?...

MCISAAC MARY 50 1914
118/3 41 Boisdale

She appears to be single as there's no corresponding Reg. No. with another surname?

Could she have died at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Daliburgh which is Boisdale Reg. Dist?

How sure are you about Mary's sister bringing up her daughter as the census is only on 1 night in 1 yr?

Is Mary recorded as Visitor/Lodger/Boarder or other?

Annie

There's a MacDonald family all through the census' in Buninver with a daughter Mary the same age.

Is it possible there's been an error somewhere as it seems very coincidental for both surnames appearing on marriages with both those families in close proximity  :-\

Aye,

And I've looked at a lot where mmn not given without result. I do know that she survived the birth as she registered it more than a month later. I didn't try fuzzy matching though.

I wonder (now I've had time to look closer)?...

The MacDonalds are 2 doors away from Mary MacIsaac.

They have a son Malcolm who's 3 yrs older than Mary.

Could he be the father of her children, hence Mary being known by MacDonald?

Can you give as the years please of the youngest childs birth & the earliest marriage with Mary deceased to narrow down a time frame?

As she was living with her mother, was she the informant on her mother's death if this was after the birth of her kids?
