Hi
Helping Eileen and can't work out the surname of the first witness (James J?? ?? ??)* on this 1802 baptism in Dalkeith. The rest is fairly easy,
Any ideas please?

It looks like Jairdain to me. A basic search at Scotland's People says there are 11 examples in OPRs, but I haven't looked at the details.
If it is this, I would imagine it is a variant of Jardine (over 66,000 at SP), Jerdan (>1000) etc.

Looks like Jairdain to me, agree with arthurk.

Thank you all.
I thought it was Jardain but Eileen wasn't sure:
Just noticed that there were a couple of witnesses to Helen's baptism in 1802:
Witnesses - James Jardain (?Jardine?) and John Mcpherson
It might be worth checking on them.

? Jourdain ?
Sounds French. ?Huguenot?
