Title: Edwards of Durban
Post by: Olleyke on Tuesday 17 October 17 19:59 BST (UK)
Hello.

I'm looking into the Edwards family. They moved from the UK to Durban, South Africa sometime between 1901 and 1911.

Arthur Edwards, born 1873, and his wife, Charlotte born 1868 Bungay, Suffolk, and she died 31 May 1957 in Durban.

They had 4 children that I'm sure of.

Hubert Marston Edwards born 1895 in Bungay, Suffolk, who married Mary Florence Ridley in 1921.
Ivy Evelyn Edwards born 1899 in Brixton, London
Irene Edwards, born 1904, died 1984
Ethel Joyce Edwards, born 23 Jan 1911 in South Africa. She married Maurice Victor Schwegmann 31 May 1941 at St Thomas Church, Durban.
A distant relative has told us they had a son called Jack too but I am yet to find evidence of him.

If anyone can help fill in any gaps it would be much appreciated! I hope it all makes sense.

Thank you :)

Kirsty

Here is the reference to Charlotte's Estate file in the PMB archives. Unfortunatelly the PMB files on-line end in 1950. You would need to either apply to the PMB archive for a copy or ask eggsa.org to go and copy it for you. The deceased estate death notice may contain a full list of her children - dependent on who filled it in - it would also possibly reference when Arthur died.

EDWARDS, CHARLOTTE. BORN IN ENGLAND. (BORN MARSTON). WIDOW. DECEASED ESTATE.

Hi

Hubert Marston Edwards died in Natal in 1970 divorced from his wife Mary Florence Edwards born Ridley

They seem to have divorced in 1952

Ivy Evelyn  also died in Natal in 1962, married a Henry Paul Olivier who died in 1970 also in Natal, remarried to a Norah

Hope this helps with some of the gaps :D

You're welcome.

Unfortunately what's online at the moment for Natal doesn't go past 1950 so can't get a look at them.

Copies of the Death Notices for Hubert and Ivy can be ordered from www.eggsa.org.  They are usually very informative if filled in correctly.

Brilliant thank you.

I've just been sorting through some old photos and found a picture of a Jack Edwards and on the back it says 'youngest son of Charlotte Edwards nee Marston (South Africa). I've also found a tree that a distant relative has sent us. I believe Charlotte was her great aunt and she is in contact with quite a few of Charlotte's great great grandchildren.

On said tree she has listed more of their children;

- Olive (twin of Kathleen), who married Tommy Arter
- Kathleen (twin of Olive), who married Norman Morn
- Molly, who married Claude Bosomworth
- Jack, who married Hilda ?
- Natalie, who died an infant

Unfortunately there are no dates attached to them

Hi,

So you can enjoy finding the children's marriages :) with images :) try searching here,

https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/2063749

I think I've found all the living children except Irene. Jack could have married Ellen Hilda Von Hirschberg, maybe she preferred Hilda to Ellen.

They don't show the parent's names but with the info you are sharing with a relative hopefully you will be able to confirm it.

Hi Daisy

Thank you so much. I managed to find all of their marriages on Familysearch (was a little easier as they all lived at 41 Monmouth Road at time of their marriages) apart from Irene as she never married. I've just struggled to find deaths of a few.

I also found out that Mollies husband after her death got remarried to the well known tennis player Mary Heeley! :)

Thank you all so much for your help

Hi Kirsty
I am Ivy Evelyn Edwards (Olivier)'s granddaughter.

She married Henry Paul Olivier and they had 3 sons - Basil Arthur, Roy and Derek.

Basil Arthur married my mother Naomi Le Roux and they had me and 2 other children.

I have some family tree documents that may be able to help you fill in the blanks.

Let me know
Adele Olivier

Click on the persons name, then click on PM and send her the message with the info you have. Sometimes people put requests up but then forget to look for more replies the older the post is.

Hello Kirsty. I'm John Laue living in NZ since March 1996 formerly born in Pietermaritzburg SA - June 1950 till 1996. I am the grandson of Hubert Marston Edwards born 1895 in Bungay, Suffolk, who married Mary Florence Ridley in 1921. I have one brother Mark Darryl Laue still living with his wife Susanna in SA. thee were only the two of us sons born to Hazel and Lothar Wilhelm Laue of Pietermaritzburg. Mary Florence "Flo" or to other relatives her junior "Aunty Pol". I read your post with much interest. I have some vintage photos of my granddad which you may find interesting. My late father while in Johannesburg, assisted my grandma 'Flo' to sell 41 Monmouth road Durban property. Flo and Hubert had two daughters only; my mother Hazel Millicent Laue (nee Edwards) Edwards and Florence Thelma Rae (nee Edwards) who married Barton Douglas Rae but they had no children. They lived for a time in Bulawayo, Rhodesia and later Durban. I am interested in extending  the Edwards/Ridley side of our family tree. The Laue side is extensive because my father, Bill was one of 12 children. Best regards, John  :)
