My 2xgr.grandmother Elizabeth Hughes was Baptised 27th Feb. 1814 Vernham Dean, Hampshire.
Elizabeth emigrated to South Australia after her marriage. Her father was John Hughes and mother
Elizabeth. I am trying to find the maiden name of Elizabeth snr. So far have been unable to locate
a marriage for John Hughes and Elizabeth. Help needed please.
Regards,
Jen.

I wonder if the clergy got the mothers name wrong :-\
Other baptisms Vernham Dean with father John Hughes - mother Susanna
Charles 26 March 1811
Henry 23 November 1817
Hannah 25 March 1821
Elizabeth would 'fit' in with that family

Thankyou for your reply Rosie. I have found a marriage of John Hughes & Susanna Smith who was the daughter of Isaac Smith & Elizabeth Ching. The marriage was 1808 Tidcombe, Wiltshire.
This John Hughes was from Vernham Dean Hampshire. I had not considered an error by the clergy
in the baptism entry. I have noted from other researchers that my 2xgr.grandmother's name may have been Elizabeth Susanna Hughes, this could certainly suggest a connection with the John Hughes
Susanna Smith marriage.

Jen.

After Rosie's response (reply 1) I would like to have the full baptism details for Elizabeth Hughes.
I only have an extracted record. Perhaps there are sponsor names which could be linked to family.
Would I have to post on the Hampshire look-up board for this help?
Thanks,
Jen.

I think that you are on the right board for this look up. I would not normally suggest starting a new post but it might be worthwhile with heading of Vernham Dean PR look up - make sure you link to this post
-
Rosie, Thankyou for your suggestion - my computer skills are limited, in spite of reading the 'how to' page on RootsChat linking to the original post is beyond me. Maybe if I just mention my first post
on the Hampshire board it would be ok?

Hi KGarrad, Thankyou for the link to the new post on Hampshire Look-up board.

Elizabeth Hughes married Thomas Gibbs 1st. September, 1832, Vernham Dean. Would the marriage certificates in Hampshire at this time record the names of both parents of the bride and groom?
Jen.
-
Hi Jen
English marriage certificates have never named both parents. After mid 1837 they should give fathers details. Witnesses can sometimes be parents but would not refer to them as such. Sorry I don't have access to Vernham Deans marriage registers to look for you.

Hi Rosie, Thankyou for clarification of information on English marriage certificates. In the
absence of parents' names the witnesses could be of interest, siblings perhaps. I'm
always hopeful ;D

Hopefully someone will read this who has access to the marriage record :)

Before the onset of Civil Registration (and thus Marriage Certificates) on 1st July 1837, the marriage entry in a Parish Record did not record father's names.
There is an example here:

Hi KGarrad, Thanks for description and example of English marriage certificate, I will note this
for future reference.
Regards,
Jen.
-
That was an example of a Marriage entry from a Parish Register, of the kind used from 1874 to 1837!
It was NOT a Marriage Certificate! ;D
Certificates came into being from 1st July 1837 - and from that date the Parish Register entry contained the same information as the Marriage Certificate.
It's a subtle, but important, difference.
-
Hi Ken, Of course it was a Parish Record, I did realize that but why I wrote "marriage certificate"
I don't know! ??? Put it down to lack of sleep, with the onset of Spring here the
Kookaburras "laugh" in a gum tree in our garden at 3.30 a.m. every day! Now
I'm sure that's not a problem you have on the Isle of Man!
When you wrote "1874-1837" what dates did you mean?
Regards,
Jen.
-
Oops! :-[
I meant 1774-1837.
1774 being the date of Hardwicke's Marriage Act - which defined what should appear on a marriage record.
1837 being the date of the onset of Civil Registration.
-
Thankyou for the dates and explanations Ken, good to know.
Jen.

As a final act of pedantry . . . . .
My father's name was Ken ;D
I am Kevin!
-
My apologies Kevin, ;D , Nothing wrong with being pedantic, especially with regard to your name!
In fact I consider pedantry to be a virtue much needed in the pursuit of family history.

Jen.
