Greenwood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY
I've run across this plaque on a distant relative's tombstone. I think it says:
U S C P
STAR with the GAR crossed swords, rifles, canon(?), trumpet, anchor
? 32
GAR

It appears to be a GAR emblem with a silhouette in in the center. Is anyone familiar with this emblem? From what I've read, I was thinking it might be United States Civil Patrol--being a branch of the GAR. Does anyone have any ideas.

Thank you Sandra, I've already read that, and several other articles.
There was mention in a NY newspaper, which I now can't find, about the GAR being requested to send patrols to Charlotte. I failed to write down the paper or issue. I did find, by googling, the same article in the NY Times, 6 Sept 1886, but of course, they only give a snipet of the article. The article mentioned that the following would be sent to Charlotte to patrol:
James W Webb
Thomas Pell
Dr. George S. Little
Henry Eason
Alexander Ryder
Frederick Cocheu
Thomas W Lindsay
