Have you found her on the 1881 census?  Is her mothers maiden name shown on the marriage cert?

Any marriage for her parents on Scotlands People?  One in 1859 - both surname McGilvray and in Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon

No cant find her on 1881 census

She did have step brothers and sisters Kate John and Hugh cant find them either but thought possibily to be younger

Yes on Sarah's marriage details in 1898 her mother was a Mary  McGillivray So it could be 1859 marriage I found that marriage of Find my past with no other details available

I did see this 1866 birth index entry https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYR2-RYB  but nothing else for this couple except a possible marriage in 1859 with Mary also showing a maiden name of MCGILVRAY https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTK6-6Z3  You need to look on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, pay to view but costs are reasonable. This will give you the original image of marriage cert to view online

Census entries are not helping either. In 1861 there is a 19yr old Neil McGillvray from Kildalton, argyleshire working as a ploughman in Erskine Renfrewshire.

They are a hard lot to trace through aren't they, Sandra  ::)

I think from what you have found on the censuses and the marriage cert from 1859, that you have very likely the right Neil. Not sign of him after excet that possible 1866 birth from earlier  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYR2-RYB

Cannot see a death for him that could so far on SP.

Another 6 credits shows that the death of a Mary McGilvray Snr in Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon of the right age was not yours.

Mary McGilvray - 61 years - 1890 - 542/ 26 - Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon

Thankyou for your kindness

I have just  letter from a cousin, saying:-

Neil McGillivray        D.193?

Daughter Sarah

Step sister Kate
Step brother Johnnie  (who used to visit my parents)

Step brother Hugh    wife Dolly
Daughters    Jessie and  Marion

My cousin thought they were younger than Sarah.  and  cousin remembers going to Morvern, and Kate was living there with Neil McGillivray,
at  Larachbeg.
     Ardtonnish Estate.
     Lochaline,
     Morvern.
It looks like Mary was born out of wedlock and these children were product of Neil and Mary together
Cant find any births for these yet

Let's work through with the new info, jennyrob  :)

Mary stated that her mother was deceased when she married in 1898. Father Neil showing as alive on the marriage cert from what you mention?

This looks a possibility for the family of the Neil that you mention from the 1901 census:

Neil Mcgillivary 53 ploughman I think from the transcript. Birth place also mistranscribed as seresay, Argyll
Grains Neil Mcgillivary 41 ages for this son and twin (?) Hugh are wrong for sure
Twins Hugh Mcgillivary 41
John Mcgillivary 13
Sarah Mcgillivary 12
Arche Mcgillivary 10
Katie Mcgillivary 8
Mary Mcneil 40 housekeeper

Address: Achuaha House, Morvern

You should check the original image on SP for this one. Possible that wife has died?

As you can see, I am trying to work back on the censuses to see what shows for this Neil. Can't easily see this Neil for certain in 1871 although there are a few entries that might be him that could fit.

1861:

Neil Mcgilvray 60 Dyke Builder b. Salen, Argyleshire
Catherine Mcgilvray 48 b. Salen, Argyleshire
Mary Mcgilvray 15
Neil Mcgilvray 12
Nk 50 ???
Archibald Mcgilvray 12
Ann Mcgilvray 10 https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XB2D-J5T
Sarah Mcgilvray 7

Address:5 Salen Village, Argyll

You can confirm the maiden name of Paterson from Neil's marriage or death regs.

One more to add now for 1851:

Niel Mcgillivray 50 agr lab.
Catharine Mcgillivray 40
Duncan Mcgillivray 12
Angus Mcgillivray 10
Isabella Mcgillivray 8
John Mcgillivray 6
Niel Mcgillivray 4
Archd Mcgillivray 3
Mary Mcgillivray 3
Ann Mcgillivray 6 Months

Address:6 Salen, Torosay Argyll

Duncan and Jean do look to have had a daughter Mary, with a birth year in the range of Neil (reputed father). 1861 below:

Duncan Mcgilvray 40 tailor b. Kilfinichen, argyleshire
Jane Mcgilvray 36 b. Kilfinichen, argyleshire
John Mcgilvray 14
Mary Mcgilvray 12 Kilfinichen, argyleshire
Hugh Mcgilvray 4
Catherine Mcgilvray 8

Address: Torranbey, Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon

Can't easily find young Mary and mother in 1891. Guessing Mary Snr married and daughter Mary show under that family group with a different surname? Mary Snr could also be deceased given the detail we have on Mary Jnr.'s marriage reg. By 1901 Mary Jnr married and sure you have it all from there.

I have just  letter from a cousin, saying:-

Neil McGillivray        D.193?

There is a death for a Neil McGilvray, aged 78 in the Calton area of Glasgow in 1930 that you could check on SP. Also a possible marriage for a Neil McGilvray to a Sarah Campbell in the Kelvin area of Glasgow in 1885.

There is a 60 yr old Neil McGilvray on the 1911 census. Entry shows in Morvern. I think just from the main index entries that there may also be in the household: Neil 25, Archibald 20, Katie 18.

There is a death in the Milton area of Glasgow in 1879 (and where possibly Mary Jnr was born in 1879) for a Mary McGilvray, aged 29. Could fit for Mary Snr from what we have.

I have sent a PM to jennyrob on this matter.  Neil MacGillivray and Mary (McCormick) were my hubby's great-grandparents, so we have quite a bit of information on the family - I am afraid that most people's research was in vain.  I've not been on the site for a couple of weeks so I didn't see this earlier - sorry!

How very rude of you  >:(    To dismiss and criticize volunteer's efforts after they spent many hours over a few days looking at the records, buying credits trying to count or discount possibilities on this mystery.

Perhaps you could have worded your reply in a more polite manner.

I am sorry if I seemed to be rude...it was certainly not meant to be so.  I am well aware of how helpful Chatters are - and, indeed, I try to be so myself.  So, for those that are insulted, I apologise.
