My great, great great grandfather appears in Hundon in 1770 but was baptised in Stradishall. I believe his parents were Edmund Elsden and Susan Marrow. I have no idea where they originate from but understand that they were married in Stradishall in 1767.
Once census records start it is relatively easy to trace the family but can anyone throw any light on the eighteenth century Elsdens, please.
Many thanks,
Heatha

Thank you for that. It, sadly, doesn't help me get back to where Edmund and Susan came from originally.

Hi,
I don't know if this helps but in the Suffolk Marriages CD (ex SFHS) there is this marriage;
21-2-1757 Hawstead,
Edmund Elsden (als) of Hunston to
Mary Batty
With a burial (ex SFHS CD) Hundon All Saints;
7-3-1815 Mary Elsden, of Hundon, (aged 42) w/o Edmund.

Hello Alan,
Thank you for that. I wonder if Hunston could be Hundon ? Hunston is 165 miles, by road, from Hawstead and Hundon is only 13. Hence, hundon sounds more likely.
I don't think the Mary buried in 1815 is the wife of the same Edmund, but the son, or grandson, of the first Edmund. This Mary was Mary (aka Molly) Hurrell, born Hundon circa 1773, baptised 6th August 1773.
Kind regards,
Heatha

Hi, I struggled a bit with your request because unless I've missed it, I don't think you've stated your GGG grandfather's christian name.
I did have a look at Stradishall parish register but couldn't see many Elsden entries at all although some of it is quite feint.
These are the entries I noted:
Martha d. of Edmund and Elizabeth Elsden baptised 20th March 1723
Elizabeth d. of Edmund and Elizabeth Elsden baptised 17th May 1746
Edmund Elsden and Susan Marrow (looked like Manow) married by licence 1st October 1767
Edmund s. of Edmund and Susan Elsden baptised 22nd August 1770
Susan w. of Edmund Elsden buried 13th October 1770

Thank you so much. You are right. I would amend my original post if I could but I can't ! My GGG grandfather was Edmund, born about 1770, son of Edmund and Susan, which you have mentioned. There are a whole string of Edmund Elsdens in the family. Going by the dates it looks as if GGGG grandfather Edmund might have been the son of Edmund and Elizabeth, although I think there may be two different Edward and Elizabeths, parents of Martha and Elizabeth.
