Post by: juleznz on Friday 20 October 17 09:30 BST (UK)
Hi everyone:)
Im looking for William WOODBURN (or DALGLEISH)born circa 1850 Fenwick
On 1851 census he is listed as William DALGLEISH at his garndfather Robert WOODBURNs residence
but in 1861 he is listed as William WOODBURN son of Roberts daughter Janet aged 25
I cant find his birth reg on sctppl and cannot find him in any other census
There is a William WOODBURN who married a Jessie ORR and ended up in Michigan USA but there seems to be a few at time of his birth
Any help would be great
Thanks

You might like to look at the paternity cases on Scottish Indexes. There is one for an Elizabeth Woodburn of Waterside Henwick (meant to be Fenwick?) pursuing Andrew Dalglish, Farmer, Ryland, Avondale. Child born 1850. Decree year 1852. Court Hamilton.

Have modified my previous post,Rosie. The defender was indeed Andrew Dalglish which matches the birth you found.

There is a possible candidate for Andrew b Galston 1820 in the 1861 census but I cannot see him in the 1851 census.

Clearly, the man who died in Michigan, 1904 is the one born to Andrew Dalgleish and Elizabeth Woodburn (same birthdate).

The baptism clearly says he was 'Natural' son so parents not married.   Often children born illegitimately in Scotland grow up with their fathers surname and explains why William is Dalgleish in 1851 census.   However, since there was clearly a paternity issue with the father Andrew Dalgleish it was reasonable for him to grow up with his mothers name of Woodburn.

As has already been stated, his mother Elizabeth married a Thomas Gilmour 26/3/1860 Fenwick and agree the 1861 Census doesn't state this his mother was named Janet - she was the only unmarried daughter living at home in 1861 but that doesn't make her the mother of William Woodburn, grandson to Robert and Janet.

Thank you very much for all your input:) I sent for the Paternity case in sct indexes and it has just arrived so il go thru it
In the census in ancestry once you go into Williams name thats where it shows Janet as mother but clearly an error?
Ive been working on Williams grandparents but no further than when i started so thats why im going thru their descendants going sideways to go backwards :)
Thanks again :)

Whoever transcribed the 1861 census for Ancestry has 'assumed' that the mother must have been Janet the daughter - original page on SP just states the family as Robert, wife Janet, daughter Janet (unmarried) and William, grandson.   Don't believe all you read on Ancestry, especially if it is a transcription.

The birth/baptism of William on SP is in the 3rd option 'Other Churches'.

Yes always best to go for the original copy on Scotland's People ...Ancestry do tend to make a lot of transcription errors ... :)
