Title: Sophia Hull & Mercy Poole
Post by: floggle toggle on Friday 20 October 17 16:56 BST (UK)
Sophia Hull died in 1932 and Mercy Poole in 1927, they are both buried in the same grave - picture is on Billion graves. The 1911 census shows Sophia as "private means" and Mercy as "cook house keeper".
Would it have been normal for 2 unrelated women to be buried in the same grave?

At that time it was not unusual for unmarried ladies of private means to have a companion/housekeeper.
Ladies magazines would carry adverts, companion wanted for lady, the idea being to attract someone of the same social class who had no money.

They had obviously been together for twenty years or more so may well have developed a close friendship rather than employee/servant.

Whilst not usual I don't think it at all unlikely

Did either of them leave a Will?  There might be a clue there. :-\

Update...if  Sophia died in Lincolnshire then there is a Will...effects £26,404 19s 7d.

Mercy also left a Will, probate to Sophia and a solicitor.

Another thought occurred to me, when you die you have no control over where you are buried, Sophia may have deliberately purchased a grave for two so that her distant relatives or whoever arranged the funeral would carry out her wishes.

I do wonder who they were?
Tom Grove Hull (who I am tracing) was from London, William Grove Hull could be Tom's grandfather (Charles (born London) was his farther) but the only William Grove I have found is from Devon.

Could Mercy have been distantly related to Sophia?
