Hi, I have been researching my GG Grandfather Alexander Macarthur for the last 3 years :o I know that he left Argyll and came to Sligo, Ireland in the 1850's where he opened a bakery/provisions suppliers in the town which remained open for almost a century.
Going by the dates on the Irish Census he was born 1833/34
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Sligo/Sligo_West_Urban/O_Connell_Street/770661/
I have searched on Scotland's People and come up with a birth record on the OPR for Glenorchy and Inishail for 19th April 1933 which could be a match - with father Peter McArthur and mother Anne Morrison, and the census return from 1841 of Peter and Anne and their young family. I can't be sure and would really appreciate any pointers

Hi
Were any of their children named Peter or Ann?
Also, I see his wife was b. Scotland - do you know her maiden name and marriage date/place?

Hi again :)
Have you looked at other births in Argyll? There are more in the age range - you could search on Family Search
For example ~

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTN1-KMG

and others.

Hi Gadget,
Thanks for your reply :D Jane Bell and Alexander Macarthur married 6th Sept 1865. Jane was born Kilmaddock, Perthshire c. 1844. They had two boys, Peter and James. Peter took over the family business and I am his descendant. James became a VET and emigrated to England to live in Bedfordshire, Leyton Buzzard (1 Market Square). I have been trying to trace James family as none of my family knew of him at all until we started researching :-\ ??? He was even awarded an MBE....
-
The Peter looks promising, given his son's name. Have you got the marriage certificate of Alexander and Jane? If so what does it give for his father?
Gadget
-
It's a while since I've looked but yes I do have the marriage cert and his father was Peter, a Topsman.
-
I see that son Peter was the informant on Alexander's death - 4 Sept 1913 from haematuria, aged 79.
I was looking to see if marriage cert image was up on irishgenealogy.ie but it's not there yet - just the index.

-
So it would be worth tracing Peter and Anne back :)
-
Hi,
I haven't seen the death cert so that's interesting thank you.
I have the marriage cert here..hope you can view it ok:

Are they here in 1841
Glencroe, Lochgoilhead
Peter, 40, ag lab
Nancy, 35
Duncan, 15
Mary, 15
Dugald, 12
Catherine, 10
Alexander, 7
John, under 1 - 7 mths on Freecen
All born Argyll
Freecen has the best transcription!
-
Two possibles for Peter, given his first son's name:
Inveraray & Glenaray
29 July 1798 Peter son of Duncan McArthur and Agnes McArthur
Kildalton (Islay)
15 April 1797 Peter son of Duncan McArthur - no mothers name given
Neither of these might be him as not all baptisms are recorded.
-
Here is the Birth Record I've homed in on:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4RPFEaaFr7yeXpZZHZPeEg4SGs/view?usp=sharing
and yes that's the family I've been looking at...it looks like they were shepherding...there are the ruins of two small cottages and sheep folds half way up the Glen. The previous page of the census gives one other family, the Smyths, also in the Glen on census night.
Here is what I came up with a few years ago....

The Duncan and Katherine Bell bpt. looks good as the name of the second daughter is Catherine :)
Don't think it's the Kildalton one as that is on Islay and they seem to stay around the same area.
I've had a good look on the 1851 but nothing so far. Will try later.
-
Just checked on the 1861 - the status of Mrs McArthur is given as widow. So Peter died 1841-1861. That 1851 census is really important.
-
Thank you, I will look on Freecen too as I haven't come across the site before!! I am new to this site also and I am very happy to be gettinga bit of help with this :D

I've been looking at the Valuation Rolls for Inveraray. This is what I've found ~
1855 Valuation Rolls of North Argyll, Inveraray
South Tullich - Widow A McArthur, tenant/occupier (owner was Duke of Argyll)

South Tullich is 5 miles north of Inveraray. A map link:

This is the Ann Macarthur I settle on when I started researching...
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYZS-HJD
Her mother's name being Mary would fit with Alexander and Ann's second child.
But the birth date of Dec 1976 would make her 44 at 1841 census.
-
The 1841 census usually recorded ages in 5 year age bands for those 15 and over - so 40-44 = 40. Also, people's ages on the census are not always accurate - it was whatever the person completing the census said it was.
Also, as I think I said earlier, baptisms, marriages (banns) and burials were not all recorded in the parish records - see
https://www.gla.ac.uk/schools/socialpolitical/research/economicsocialhistory/historymedicine/scottishwayofbirthanddeath/
You'll have to try and find Ann/Nancy/Agnes's death post 1861 to hopefully find her parents' names.
Have you got details of her children's marriages? Following them might indicated when she died.
Did you see that I found a probable for her on the Valuation Rolls in South Tullich, Inveraray in 1855.
-
Once I'd located her with Dugald and Una on the 1871, it took me only a couple of minutes and a few credits to find her death on SP.
Agnes Mcarthur, widow of Peter McArthur, shepherd, died on 23 Aprl 1879 at Dugald and Una's home in Old Kilpatrick.
Her death cert shows her as being 85 yrs old. Her parents were Alexander Morrison, farmer and Mary MS Campbell, both deceased. Dugald, her son, was informant.

Added - note that she went by Anne, Ann, Agnes and Nancy
-
Sorry that should have been Peter & Ann in my last post ::)
I have traced Alexander's brother Dugald McArthur and his family quite a bit...he was a Bridge Keeper at Hungryside Bridge, Cadder. They had at least 3 children, Isabella, Agnes & Peter. He also left a Will but no mention of his mother.
And from memory I traced John to England but don't seem to have any paperwork on this ???
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XTG8-R92
I did see your information on widow A. McArthur at Tullich South thank you, I will do a bit of research on the Estate.
I haven't looked much at death certificates so this is an area that I will look at further for sure.
Thank you so much for your help here.
I've just seen your most recent post....I should have been quicker replying but that is great thank you again!!
-
I then tried to link Mary Campbell to the family of Peter Campbell and Isobel Ferguson of Auchindrain as it has been suggested anecdotally that they may have had a daughter Mary but there isn't a record as far as I know!
-

-
I don't have either Margarets or Ann but I have a John for 1801....
I think you have Ann as she married Peter McArthur ;D
-
Yes of course..... ::)
Could this be the John born 1801...and his wife Ann and their young family and any maybe two nephew and a neice?
-
It could well be son John and wife. Not sure of the others - maybe follow them on the 1851. The 1841 doesn't show relationships.
-
:)
Very interesting ~
On the Valuation Roll for 1855, John Morrison is down as the tenant of Salachary - only a few properties away from South Tullich where the Widow A McArthur was tenant.
-
Yes that's fantastic Gadget, I see that's on land owned by George Campbell 8th Duke of Argyll who died at Inverary Castle in 1900...I will get my teeth into this one and hopefully nail down some more facts...thanks again (I am stuck for time so I might get an hour or two during the week to look at all this but I am delighted with your help)
-
Will leaave you to it now but give a yell if you need any more help :)
Love your avatar, by the way.

Thanks that's my Granny Kathleen McArthur née McCormick :D
