James emigrated to Australia in 1841. On the ships log he is named as James Taylor.
He sailed on the Victoria in Oct 1841 (this ship was for the private use of the Hillhouse/Hilhouse company)
He states his mother as Jane.
We think his grandfather was James Martin Hillhouse/Hilhouse as
In James Martin Hillhouse/Hilhouse will approx 1822/23 it states bequests to the 3 lawful sons of my deceased son Robert
Robert. James, and George Poole
Robert senior died in 1821
There is a burial in Clifton Gloucester of a Jane Pool in 1819
Could this be James mother?
What happened to James, George and Robert afterwards
We’re they put with relatives?
Name of Taylor? Is that why he calls himself Taylor?
Did he use his grandfathers name when he arrived in Australia.
Would there be any school registers around 1825 naming these boys?
Any ideas please
Many thanks

Not solving your questions but.....Unless there's another part of the lengthy will I didn't spot, it doesn't refer to the 3 POOLE sons of the late Robert HILHOUSE as 'lawful' - rather, it clearly refers to their illegitimacy:
"...And shall pay and apply a sum not exceeding the yearly sum of one hundred pounds to and for the maintenance, education and advancement of Robert Pool, George Pool and James Pool, three natural children of my late son Robert deceased..."
Cheers

James TAYLOR sailed on the Victoria in October 1841 - from where? - could possibly be on the 1841 census, taken 6 June 1841) ? what occupation was he in Australia + what names did he give his children i.e. family names.
From other information on the 'net' - it states James was born c1814.
Looking at the Gloucestershire Baptism Index CD after 1813 - the surname TAYLOR was sometimes spelt TAYLER - 81 in total

?
Baptism at Wareham Dorset - 29 December 1816
James TAYLER, parents: Edward & Jane

I have found 2 James Taylor in the 1841 census in Bristol
About the right age
1 a surveyor and 1 a merchant
He sailed in the October 1841 from Bristol
His children were called Taylor a Jane and a Robert
He called himself James Martin Hillhouse Taylor.
He was lined up for a job as an agent in a shipping company in Morpeth.
I cannot find any baptisms that state mother only (Jane) though
Thank you
I would love to know if the Jane Pool who died in Clifton had an age.

Looking at the Bristol Records Office Wills, they do hold the Will of : Mary HILHOUSE - 1827 (Mary his wife, is mentioned in James' Will)
A2a: The National Archives - hold other info on Hilhouse

In Mary’s Will she bequeaths £10 each to her other grand children but they are not named unfortunately. 2 grand children are mentioned but not any of the Pool children.
There is nothing about them in George’s will either.
This is really a mystery.
The only way to find anything out I feel is to have more information on the Jane Pools death in 1819
And any school records.
Thanks everyone for your input

Do you have James 1875 Australian Death Cert?
TAYLOR James Martin Hilhouse Reg 7685/1875, Mothers given name Jane, district Morpeth
Does it contain any extra info?
-
There is no extra info on it I’m afraid

I have found 2 James Taylor in the 1841 census in Bristol
About the right age
1 a surveyor and 1 a merchant
Could you please give the census references so we can see who you are talking about
-
I am not at home at the moment will find when I am at home
-
Here are the 2 census for James Taylor
copyright images removed
-
Thank you. :)
The first one you have listed occ Surveyor living St James Bristol was not born in County
The second one, a merchant who was staying at an Inn was born Somerset
I will look again later ;D
-
The 2nd one has been mistranscribed st James is in Gloucestershire and on the census where it says born in county James has ticked yes. So he was born in Gloucestershire.
Yes the other James the surveyor was not born in county.
But as I don’t know where the Pool children were born is doesn’t mean very much
-
Sorry about the Somerset, there are many records for Bristol showing the wrong county as it is on the border. I tend to search both counties.
Where did Robert Hillhouse die
-
At his fathers house in Clifton Gloucestershire.
-
Just to mention, I had a read of the Will of one of James Martin Millhouse' daughter Mary Ann (Marian) written 1846, proved 1848. No mention whatsoever of any issue of her late brother Robert or of there being any surviving spouse of Robert or anyone with the surnames Tayler or Pool.
It does mention her siblings: Sarah, Abraham, George and Martin & Eleanor and various other family (Bush etc)

POOL/TAYLOR
Looking at Family Search - there are a 'few' POOLE/TAYLOR marriages in Gloucestershire
Anna POOL/George TAYLOR - 7 April 1771
Ann POOLE/William TAYLOR - 1819 - Westbury on Trym
Joseph POLE/Elizabeth TAYLOR - 26 May 1830
etc
My x Grandfather in two later census returns - went by his Grandmother's maiden name.
British Newspapers on Line - don't subscribe - but do mention Robert HILHOUSE and his brothers - as Alderman
-
It is a complete mystery.
Many thanks for all your comments
I will have a look to see if there are any Taylors on the Hillhouse side.
-
? Assume you have this information re: Robert HILHOUSE (checking on the National Archives) include this item
Held at Bristol Archives
Reference: 36075/17
Letters of Adminstration (copy) of the goods of Robert HILHOUSE of Bristol, batchelor, granted to George HILHOUSE, his brother. Records of the Albion Dockyard.
British newspapers on Line: Saturday 29 March 1817, Robert HILHOUSE Esq, Clifton Assembly Rooms
-
Yes I do thank you
-
As Robert died without making a will and administration of his goods etc was given to his brother
Would the 3 boys be next of kin even if they were illegitimate but recognised as ‘natural’ sons?
Would they have been entitled to his estate?
Not sure about the law in this respect

I have researched James' life while in Morpeth, NSW, Australia. Had no idea he was born Poole. I have never found a picture of him. Are there any?
