Post by: wilcoxon on Wednesday 25 October 17 12:03 BST (UK)
  IOM museum.
I  have Peter Litherland a debtor confined 20 Jan 1832, he died in gaol in 1833 and is buried at Malew.

Can anyone add to this please.

thanks, I  have those details, I was hoping to find more about why he was there, who did he owe money to etc. There is very little else  on the museum website.

I need to get to the Manx Museum, as the newspapers there are free to search once you are there.

Unfortunately, I am busy today and tomorrow and the museum library won't be open again until Wednesday. ::)

So, I am hoping someone else has answers before then ;D

thank you so much, I didn`t realise you were in IOM. Lucky you !

Peter B  was the son of the famous watchmaker also named Peter. Peter B married twice, firstly to Elizabeth Buckley of Rochdale who died, then to Mary Phillips. There was a daughter Mary baptised Liverpool in 1826. What happened to these is unknown so far. Interestingly in 1867 there is an advertisement in the papers asking for the register entry for the marriage of Peter B and Elizabeth.
Quite a mystery there.
There are also Williamsons who were artists in the IOM census, they were from a LITHERLAND marriage .

Civil Registration of marriages began on the Isle of Man in 1878!
There are only 4 Litherland marriages in the registers (manxBMD.com); the first in 1925.

suspect you will have to search the chancellery court records to find details but not sure these are online
the date of the Action is given as 18 Jan 1832 - most of other debtors imprisoned by such actions would appear to be discharged within days not the 15months of his case
