Hello all, I need to obtain the birth date and marriage date and new name of a current (I believe) family member, then trace back from there. Where should I search for this info please? Remembering I don't speak German!

By 'current' do you mean alive? If so then Rootschat rules are that you cannot make such enquiries here.
In any case, why not ask the person?

That'll teach me to read the T&Cs then! I live in UK the current family member in Germany. Wouldn't work well, would it ....

In Germany, they have Privacy Laws.
So you can only see birth records after 110 years; marriage records after 80 years; and death records after 30 years.
A direct relationship to the subject of the record sought will be required in cases where the required time period has not yet elapsed. Even then, the records may be accessible if it can be shown that all "participating parties" have died at least 30 years ago. Participating parties are both parents and the child in birth records, and both spouses in a marriage.
