Title: Wellington Archives Intention to Marry
Post by: ellvera on Thursday 26 October 17 06:57 BST (UK)
Hello
I am reluctant to ask ,because I had a look up three weeks ago and understand if the answer is no.

If I could have a look up of the Intention to Marry of Lewis Hook and Eliza Mexted ,who married on the 27th February 1861.I would be grateful.

Unless someone has any suggestions of where else to look for an elusive birth registration ???.

I have been trying to find his” eldest” daughter’s birth  so that I can get a certificate  and hopefully  establish if he is ,in fact, named as her father. Thus giving me an approximate year of his arrival in NZ.

Sarah Jane Mexted Hook was born in 1858.This is consistent with her age at marriage and death.

When she married George Romeril in 1875 at St John’s Presbyterian, Wellington her name is Sarah Jane Mexted ,as it is on the BMD Index. Witnesses: Lewis and Eliza Hook

I’d get her death cert, but the information will more than likely be what everyone believes to be true, won’t it?

I cannot find her birth in the BMD Indexes or on Family Search –not under Hook or Mexted or variations of both.

There are Sarah Jane’s with mother Eliza  but the surname isn’t right .

I’ve looked at every Mexted  and Hook child born between 1857 and 1859….and every child with no name in the same date range.

There is another large Hook family in NZ but they are not related.

I bought a cert for an un-named child of an Eliza and George Mexted (her father), thinking they might have given her father’s name out of necessity.

But that child was Eliza’s  youngest sister Harriett. Her mother was named  Elizabeth or Eliza as well.

My next step would be to look at the fiche, but these and four CD’s are the sum of our genealogy resources at the moment and are stored at a branch library at the other end of town. They are only available on a Monday from 9.30am to 1pm.which is fairly hopeless.

Thankyou
Barbara

Wow!
you guys have been busy ;D

I'll try and reply in order:

Yes, Minnehaha ,that is Eliza's obituary.

Twiggy,I think a lot of people have based their trees on this findagrave entry.I'd actually be interested to know if these entries are checked or just random volunteers?

Bennett Mather Hook is the mother of the people listed below the middle three ,who are Lewis and Eliza's family.

This is the other Hook family. The mother married three times, which is why some of the children are listed as Pilcher on this and the passenger list.

I have a wonderful book I picked up at a recent book fair called Tawa Flat and the Old Porirua Road,a really lucky find ;D

Has all the Mexted and the other Hook family.

THANK YOU Spades ;D

You are right Minnehaha - Lewis appears as Louis in the English Census and other records and the

Maxted/Mexted is a real pain.

Thanks everyone,much appreciated

Barbara :)

P.S. I didn't even have the Mexteds in my sights when I found that book,so it was a real bonus :)

I did wonder if Lewis was given some incentive to marry Eliza - The Mexteds were a respected family and while the book goes into some detail about the marriages of Eliza's siblings, it briefly mentions that "Eliza married Lewis Hook, No relation to the Hooks in Porirua".

Mind you ,it also says they went on to have a large family of 14 children - if they did, there are five unaccounted for!
Also when Eliza died ,she left everything to her children, nothing to Lewis.

Thanks, Minnehaha

I don't recall seeing it,but it looks pretty accurate.

Lewis and Eliza had 5 other children ,not 4.

Mary Ann came between Sarah and Louisa-1862

Lewis Alexander-1873

Alfred George Mason-1875

Eliza-1876

Edith-1878

Elizabeth's maiden name was Wilmshurst and I'm not sure how many Spicer children came to NZ.
I believe one or two of her Wilmshurst siblings travelled with them as well.

Will have to check the passenger list - it was the William Bentinck they sailed on.

Barbara :)

Thank you so much, Spades.

Lewis can't be Sarah Jane's father then.

Hello Barbara,

Here is the probated will of Lewis Alexander HOOK.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9KZ-QVGC?cc=1865481

His will was executed in 1909. Siblings mentioned:

William Henry, Alfred George Mason, Louisa Twyneham (spelling?), Maria Elizabeth, Eliza Maud, Edith Evangeline Jessie.

Sarah Jane died in 1924 but she is NOT mentioned in the will of Lewis Alexander...........Significant?

Thanks Minnehaha

That's interesting.

I had seen Lewis Alexander's probate briefly when I was looking for the will of Lewis Snr.
But I hadn't noticed that Sarah Jane was left out.Knowing what I know now, that could well be significant.
I do recall finding some "In Memoriam" notices for Lewis Alexander and I don't think Sarah Jane was mentioned in those either - will have to go and investigate.

I had assumed that neither Sarah Jane or her siblings would have been aware that Lewis wasn't her father ...................maybe not :o

Hi Barbara,

It might be worthwhile to obtain the 1920 death printout for Lewis HOOK. Although not named, this should show the ages of his living issue. Of course even if included, it would not confirm that Sarah Jane was his daughter, however if she was NOT included...........  ???
