Hi Antoinette and welcome to rootschat.  :)

Do you mean born Strand? Do you have Edward in the 1871 census with his family?

What exactly are you looking to find about Edward?

Hello, Antoinette, and welcome. You'll find great help on here, but it helps researchers to be given as much information as you actually have, about the person you want aid with. Do you know any of his siblings, descendants, or parents, or spouse?

Between 1867 and 1869 there are no Edward White registrations showing up under Stand or Holborn

The 1891 census has this entry:

3 Gamuel Road, Walthamstow

Edward White 23 Athlete - London, Strand
Elizabeth White 23 - wife - London, St Clements

Is that him?

There is a marriage
1901 St Pauls Holborn but because Elizabeth's age is 3 years out I wonder

Edward Charles White 23
Elizabeth Sarah 20

But we need more information Antoinette

Thank you all for your help.I think Edward White was bit of an enigma. Family said that he was borin Charing Cross 1868. He was christened in St.Martins In the Field. He was a boxer and in 1888 became heavyweight champion of England. He then became a publican in East London [Cable Street being one of them] until he retired. He married twice first wife I think was Elizabeth who died second was my Grandmother Alice. This is all I know. . but I will keep trying

ShaunJ's find of the "athlete" in 1891 (at reply #4) looks very promising in light of the boxing.

From newspaper reports it appears Edward won the amateur heavyweight title in 1887 rather than 1888, as a member of the Belle Sauvage Amateur Athletic Club.

The title fight took place in the gymnasium of the Orion Gymnastic Club at Casterton St, Hackney on Friday 4 February 1887.  E. White (Belle Sauvage A.C.) defeated J. Baltus (Orion G.C.).

(The Sporting Life, 5 February 1887).

Antoinette, can you be a bit more specific about the second marriage (to Alice) from which you are descended?  What children did Edward and Alice have?

Oh I see - I think she was Alice Maude Wood - they're together unmarried in 1901, running a pub in Bethnal Green (when she's down as Maud Wood), then there is a marriage for them Sep qtr 1903 Mile End.

He was christened in St.Martins In the Field.
What details do you have on the baptism & where did you find out about it?

ADDED: For reference - 1901 as avm found - RG13; Piece: 289; Folio: 74; Page: 13

Slightly more information:

1911 census he states he was born in St.Martins in the Fields and I was always told he was christenened there.
I know for a fact he was married for the 2nd time to Alice in 1903 where he stated he was a widower.
In the 1891 census I found an Edward White whose wife was Elizabeth and he stated he was from the Strand and he was an Athlete.
I do know that in 1888 he was a boxer and became Heavyweight champion of England.
He then became a publican and had pubs in London mostly the East End.
He died in 1936  abt.

What did he say about the name and occupation of his father?

You say 'I know' but just wondering as to your proof.   As avm228 says, what is the name of his father when he married?

I cannot find a birth/baptism for an Edward White in St. Martin in the Fields??

I'm just concerned you could end up following the wrong Edward without some kind of proof.

WHITE    Edmund         Mile End    1c   749
White    Edward         Mile End    1c   749

It seems from the Ancestry card catalogue that their online baptisms for St Martin's in the Fields only goes up to 1858.

Like others, I would like to see Edward's age &occupation plus name & occupation of father from 1903 marriage certificate.

There is a marriage
1901 St Pauls Holborn but because Elizabeth's age is 3 years out I wonder
Edward Charles White 23
Elizabeth Sarah 20

There is a 1 Aug 1891 marriage at St Paul's Clerkenwell for an Edward Charles White type founder age 23 son of Edward James White same occ to Elizabeth Sarah Rayner age 20 daughter of George Robert Rayner cab driver, but as 1 Aug was after 1891 census - unless the couple in the quoted 1891 census are pre-empting the issue  :).

If Elizabeth died it must have been between 1891 & 1903...aged 20 - 32. Nothing jumps out on freebmd yet.

Edward White
Died age 64 (birth about 1867) in March quarter 1931 in Southwark

Edward was "single" in the 1901 census with Maud, so I wonder whether he was ever lawfully married to Elizabeth.

Waiting to hear back from Antoinette on the father's name and occupation so this may be a waste of time, but just logging it as a possibility from the 1881 census (just look at the age differences!):

15 Lambs Conduit Passage, Holborn

John White 69 - head - shoemaker - Woolwich
Sarah 59 - wife - Lambeth
Louisa 23 - daur - St Giles
Edward 13 - son - St Martins
Ellen 4 - daur - St Giles

There's a baptism at St Martins-in-the-Fields in June 1867 for Edwin White son of Sarah & John  White, messenger, 5 Taylors Buildings.

From GRO
Edwin White  mmn Tindley  December quarter 1867 St Martin in the Fields.

Which is a rather late registration to go with that baptism.

Louisa White's birth was registered in St Giles in 1857, mmn Tindley

John (shoemaker) & Sarah White (with Louisa 14 and Edward 4) are in very crowded accommodation at 23 Great Earl St, St Giles in 1871.  RG10/342/31/55.

Also there is "son in law" (stepson) Thomas Beattie, 17 b St Giles.

Marriage: John White & Sarah Beattie, Dec qtr 1860 Strand 1b 685 (corresponds to St Mary, Soho).

As a Messenger at the House of Lords he would not be a shoemaker, surely?

Are you corresponding with Antoinette by personal message as this is the 2nd time you have added further information she hasn't openly posted?

Or is there another source?

I have asked Antoinette to reply on here, which she has done, and she has also replied to me with some of the same information, and some different, so I have told her that I have copied it, or amended it, and then posted it.

I so agree everything seems to point to John White the 'Shoemaker' being Edward's father but family 'folklore' always said that his father was a clerk in the City. seems a case of Chinese whispers to me! put I will keep plodding on lol
