Is anyone able to check the parish registers of Faversham for the marriage of Isaac Watson in 1672.
On familysearch the marriage appears twice but with his wife's surname spelt two different ways.
Here's the two entries
Isaac Watson and Mary Dundell
31 Dec 1672 Faversham
Isaac Watson and Mary Qunderl
31 Dec 1672
I was wondering what her name is down as in the original registers? Could one of these two names be a previous married name? I've been unable to trace her using either name so far.
Thanks in advance

I would say it is a mistranscription from the orriginal name .Only one same person just difficult to read on orriginal .

That's what I thought. The puzzle is, which is her correct surname?

I've had a look at the original and the Grooms surname does not look like Watson, more like Batson when comparing with other 'W's on the page
It has been transcribed as Isaac BATSON & Marie OUNDORL

Another curious variation. I have Isaac's christening and also his Will so I'll check the Will to see if there's any sign of the spelling "Oundorl" in it. It looks to me as if whoever wrote her name did it as they heard it, Dundell, Qunderl, Oundorl, etc
I suspect Isaac's name might also have been written as it was heard, I have also seen it written elsewhere as Hotson, Hatsen, and one transcription even looks like Warton because the T and S are so tricky to read.
I'll see if I can find her using that spelling variation now.

I think Mary might be a dead end for now. I've tried searching for her using various spelling variations without much luck. She'll wait though.......

Hi,
If you find me a thread that allows attachments - I have d/l a clipping of the marriage entry so you can try and figure it out, if that helps any.

"d/l"?
I'll have a look at his Will tomorrow and see if that gives any other clues.

I've just looked up an old paleographic alphabet and her surname definitely begins with an 'O' and from comparing other letters from the page in the register would say it ends in 'del'

Could it be Oundell or Ondell perhaps?

I've looked at allsorts of surnames -shall I put it on the deciphering board. There are a couple of good eagle eyed decipherers on here. Much better at this than me :)

You could do if you think it might be useful. I've not done any more research on her yet but I'm going to re-read Isaac's Will to see if that gives any clues.
Meanwhile I've found some very interesting info regarding John Chambers which I'll post on that page shortly.
Best Wishes
