I'm trying to get the Tabs across top instead of along side.... They do move but how??
Use to like Firefox but the latest release with tabs at side is ridiculous. Website pretty useless too.
-
Ahh.....sorted!! Grrrr
-
You'll probably have had their email about a totally new Firefox version coming soon, you can sign up for Beta testing if you want to ::) I gave that a miss but did look at what they have in mind.
Why can't these companies leave things alone? I use a different website to check on my savings and they've just changed their website from a plain simple one, to one full of bells and whistles which obviously the web designers like, but I bet they get a lot of complaints from the actual users.
-
I use Firefox, and mine is up-to-date (56.0.2).
The tabs run along the top ;D
I've never seen them down the side? Must be an option I have never used?
-
Yes, have 56.0.2 also, when it updated the tabs were at side. Part of Firefox's "improvements"
-
Maybe (for me) it's because I always "Restore Tabs" if I have to close down?
I usually have 6 sessions open!
they contain 6 tabs, 5 tabs, 7 tabs, 5 tabs, 3 tabs and 4 tabs respectively!:o
If I restore, then I get the same sessions and the same tabs.
e.g. all Family History is on one session (Ancestry, FindMyPast, FreeBMD, LancashireBMD, Cornwall OPC, FamilySearch and GenUKI)
RootsChat, BBC, another forum, and 3 Ice Hockey tabs in another session.
And so forth ;D
-
Maybe....but what if they decide to put them at the side?? ;D That is what they gave me!
-
I have the up to date version too, but there's another version in the pipeline, Firefox Quantum browser available from 14 November. See www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/quantum/
-
I have the latest version as well and my tabs all run across the top. I tried some of their Test Pilot options, most I don't use, the only one I did keep was the Screenshot, it's easier than the way I used to have to do it.
Did you try this?
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/953933
I also always use the "Restore Previous Session" option, that way all my usual ones open up.
-
I have had the Firefox update (56.02) and the tabs are still along the top but I have had another problem for some time (not associated to the update) I cannot get the "bookmarks" to Index by name, nothing happens ???

I'm sorted now.
I have "Never remember History" etc selected so not have Restore Session.
-
Have Option here now for Tabs

-
When I bookmark something I usually type the name in the box myself, usually a shorter version then sort them into the appropriate folder
-
Side tabs - yes please (so long as they show titles and not just icons)! After all, it's not considered strange to have bookmarks or history in a sidebar, so why not tabs?
I experimented with a side tabs add-on in Firefox (desktop, Windows 7) a bit ago and quickly got used to it. For me the advantages seemed to be
(a) you can get 20 or more tabs in a column without them shrinking and losing most of their titles, so it's much easier to find the one you want
(b) with a wide screen monitor there's more side-to-side space than can be read comfortably, so you might as well use some of it for a column of tabs, and then get some extra top-to-bottom depth instead
With the latest versions of Firefox I gather they haven't yet managed to hide the top tabs when you have them down the side, but as soon as they do I'll be trying side ones again.
I'm a bit mystified, Hallmark, by your screenshots. I'm using Firefox 56.0.2 and haven't got anything like that, nor any kind of button to switch from top to side. Which version and operating system do you have?

Thanks, Hallmark - but it's odd that you have a side tabs option in Firefox 56.0.2 and I don't. Could it be a Windows 10 thing? Or because I use a Basic theme in Windows 7 rather than Aero?

I'm running Windows 10 and Firefox latest update and my tabs are where they should be
Apparently using the tools and the Addons you can change the tabs to the side if you want to. I just prefer them along the top.

Yes, me too but they gave them to me at side and no option to change......grrrrrrrrr

I probably got the Upmarket Version.... ;D ;D 8)

;D ;D ;D ;D
Have you tried to change it using the Tools. Mine appears at the top of my browser or if you click on the 3 stripes it gives you a drop down menu, (mine is on the right hand side of the browser) pick the Addons and see if you can do it from there.

I have Tabs at top now....
I tried all those but no good.
-
So all sorted finally!!! ;D ;D
-
Yes I tried everything for half an hour before posting....as soon as I posted I found answer ;D

I cannot get the "bookmarks" to Index by name, nothing happens
Click on Bookmarks at the top of the page, the show all bookmarks, at the top you'll see Organise, Views, Import and Backup. Click on Views and there's an option to sort by Names, Tags, Location, Most recent visit, Description, Added, Last modified and also A>Z or Z>A Sort Order.
-
Aha... It gave me an Extension I did not ask for!! Nor did I download it....grrrrrr

I have 2 lists of bookmarks (which I have not found a way of merging) 1 under Edge which works with "sort by name" the other is under Firefox and called "other bookmarks" ( I use Firefox) which no longer responds to the "sort by name" option

Do you mean by installing an add-on, or that there's a built-in command there somewhere? I'm doing without side tabs for the time being so haven't got an appropriate add-on installed, but going to where you suggest doesn't give me a built-in option either.

So what was the answer? I'm apparently in a minority here, but I like side tabs and I can't find where to switch to them.

Ah, that sounds as though you might be testing experimental features. This was mentioned in the link I put in Reply #16. I added the link as an edit a little after posting, but as replies were coming fairly quickly it's possible some of you may have missed it. Here it is again: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1180751
As much as possible I try to avoid sending data back to software providers, but often it has to be a deliberate opt-out. The article tells you more about this particular issue with tabs, and how to opt out of the experiment. It seems that my opted out status may have kept me from seeing the side tabs in this case.
-
The Extension gets you the sidetabs option.
I have removed it and now that Icon has gone!!

-
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-center-redux/?src=search is what they gave me....grrr
-
Thanks for the link - I've now installed Tab Center Redux, and while I've still got the tabs along the top, it does now give me the option of seeing them in the sidebar as well - plus previews/thumbnails, which was something else I used to like. :)
I don't understand how you got it without agreeing to it, though. What I now have doesn't seem to come with the button to move the tabs to or from the side, so maybe yours was an experiment which took the idea a bit further....? :-\
-
I don't know either...just ended up with it!
-
called "other bookmarks" ( I use Firefox)
Kimbrey do you have File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help at the top of your Firefox screen? If so and you click on Bookmarks and go to Show All Bookmarks you should find the ones you have in "other bookmarks". Put them in whichever order you choose as I described earlier and it should also alter the ones in "other bookmarks".
If you haven't got File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, Help at the top of your Firefox screen, right click at the top and tick Menu Bar.

This thread is great I've learnt loads. Thanks.
I'd quite like the idea of tabs at the side so I'm giving it a go but I don't like having them at the top at the same time.
Ah I see the tabs at the top at the same time is a bug they are working on
-
Thank you LizzieW - sorted now :)
