Title: Double Baptism of Arthur Edward Bulbeck 1891 -1894
Post by: oscardaphers on Friday 03 November 17 18:15 GMT (UK)
Evening Rootchatters,
Just a quick couple of questions about a sad story.

Arthur Edward Bulbeck 1891-1894

My 2x great uncle was born on the 9th April 1891 in Southwick Sussex and was baptised there in the May of the same year. (select births and christenings)
The family obviously travelled for work and went to London and then to Portsmouth.
I had previously found the death of Arthur in Portsmouth Qtr 3 1894
Today I have found from new records for another baptism -
2nd July 1894 - Portsea, St Mark, St Saviour's Mission Church and the Ascension. This gave me his actual birth date. This is confirmed by his parents names and the address.

What I have found to be written in the margin is PRIVATE DIED.

Why a second baptism?
Would this have been written following his death?
Was it a private Baptism?
Could he have already died, or was he dying and was this more like the last rites and given at home?
Hope somebody can give me an explanation.
Kind Regards
Wendy

I believe 'Private' means it was performed at home.

They may have called the Priest to the house because the child was dying.

I've a couple of Bulbeck men on my family tree, Wendy! Both from Sussex. One married to my maternal branch and one to my paternal branch! I'll send you a message.

Kind regards,
Glen  :)
