Title: Sicily Records; DiNatale
Post by: magnum702 on Saturday 04 November 17 06:55 GMT (UK)
Looking for some info on my Great Grandfather Antonino DiNatale . He was born in Sicily possibly in the 1890's or so. He immigrated in 1921 from Palermo and I believe his place of birth was Furnari, Sicily.

I don't know a lot other than he used to run with some pretty unsavory fellas in New York. From what I understand he was shot and killed at a poker game. I was actually looking for an Obit or some type of newspaper article but I have had zero luck.

Thanks....

No, that's not him I don't recognize any of those names. Unfortunately I don't know the spellings of any of the children but he did marry a woman with the family name Santa Maria

I think it can be helpful to start with what you know and work back from there.  Do you know when/where he died?  If his children are deceased, what were their names and dates of birth & death?

The passenger list that you mentioned indicates that he was going to Johnstown, Pennsylvania to join his brother-in-law Antonino Ruvolo.  Do you know if he stayed in that area at all?  It also says his wife was Rosa Baglione and she was still in Italy.  Did she come over later?

Antonino was born on June 10 1895, in Furnari Sicile. Could not find an entry on the USA SSDI Index.
Rosa was born on February 28 1895, in Furnari Sicile. Could not find an entry on the USA SSDI Index.

SSDI - Social Security Death Index was up and running by about 1962/63 ish.

It appears maybe I gave you the wrong Antonino DiNatale possibly

I think his date of death was Jan 12, 1936 in New York City probably Kings County

He had a son Antonino DiNatale who was born shortly after his death in 1936 and died in Sacramento, CA in the mid 90's maybe 1994 or 1995. I was a teenager and my mom was close to him.

My mother's mom was Jenny but I don't know what it's short for.

The Antonino I am looking for married a Santa Maria but I don't know her first name

There was only one passenger list that I saw fit the date and place of birth that you mentioned.  Where did you get the information about his year of his arrival and birth place?

There is a possible death of a young child of Antonino and Antonetta here - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24MM-TNG

The death index at www.italiangen.org gives a death of an Antonino Dinatale, age 40, on 12 Jan. 1936 in Kings County.

There is a newspaper article apparently about his death here - https://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/52687594/?terms=Dinatale  It says that there was a fight about a card game, Anthony/Antonino chased his best friend with a knife after the friend criticized his playing, and the friend shot him.

The grooms'/brides' index on www.italiangen.org has a marriage for Antonio DiNatale and Antoinett Santomaria on 5 Sep. 1925 in Kings Co.

On www.fultonhistory.com, there is an article about Antonino's killing which gives similar information as the other one and states that his address was 301 Court St.  If you use an exact phrase search for "Giacomo Salvato" (the shooter), it should come up.  There is a Giacomo Salvato on Court Street in the 1940 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQR9-MP4 - so maybe he didn't go to prison due to self-defense?

Considering that address, this seems to be another death of a young child of Antonino & Antoinette.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WRW-XFF

Antonino DiNatale and Antoinette Santa Maria got their marriage license on 2 Sep. 1925 in Brooklyn.  The license number was 15450.  If you are going to order a vital record to try to get further back for these two, this may be the best one to get.  There is more information about what is on the marriage license here - https://www.reclaimtherecords.org/records-request/1/

This is Antoinette on the 1925 NY state census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSSR-4VV  The image shows she was at 149 Sackett St., the same address noted in the newspaper listing their marriage license.  It said she had been in the US for 17 years, was an alien, and her occupation was housework.

The head of the household was Nicolas Deluca - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KSSR-4VS  This seems to be the Deluca family in the 1930 census - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7XC-KQD  This seems to be Nicolas' death - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WTC-ZJC

The Delucas have a niece named Antoinette Deluca with them in 1920 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MJPT-7VR https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9RJN-QRL?i=5&cc=1488411  Not sure if that was her with the wrong surname or a different niece.

It looks like Nicolas' wife Grace/Grazia was the Santa Maria connection.  This appears to be their marriage record - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:249C-BTF

A birth of one of their children:  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WZG-BTM

Deaths of two of their children, one of which mentions the 149 Sackett address:

Possible siblings of Antoinette's aunt Grace/Grazia from Messina, Italy, as the parents' name match the ones from Grazia's marriage record:

This I presume is the widowed Antoinette in 1940:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQRH-ZFW

This would then be them (indexed as "Dematale") in 1930:

Wow..... this is exactly what I was looking for. I think there is a little more to the story then what is being told in the paper but this is amazing.

Thank you so much

Jeanne Micalizzi - 6 January 1926 passed away 26 April 2012 - New York - aged 86 years.
Listed US Obit Index - Residence - Bethpage.

Sandra

That is my grandmother's name but I don't think that's her, she passed away when I was very young. Maybe 10 or 11 which would have been 1990 or so. She was born in 1926 but in July.
