Hello All,
The couple named in the heading married in St Paul, Bristol, 10 June 1832.
I have this information from FamilySearch.
I know the name of Frances' father but would love the name for Rees's father, and his birth place.
How do I get a copy of this marriage?
I know I can write to the Bristol Record Office and hopefully they can tell me the cost before I commit myself, but I am wondering if there is an easier way.
Thank you.
Jean
PS I do have their children well documented so please do not worry about finding them.

I've just found the same record but not from Ancestry-
This is what I've already typed:
I see that they had a daughter named Dinah could this baptism be a possible for Rees as his birth year seems to be circa 1805 from the later censuses:
Lamas Street Meeting House (Independent), Carmarthen
31 August 1804
Rees Thomas, son of Rees and Dinah Thomas

Quick Search again on Non-Conformist
gives
Christenings and the same Meeting House
Rees THOMAS - 11 June 1805 (so an earlier Rees) - at that time, Rees & Dinah were from the Parish of Lanbody?
Jane THOMAS - 28 November 1802 - now in St Peters Parish
Rees THOMAS - (2nd Son) - 31 August 1804
Hannah THOMAS - 22 March 1807
-
1841 Census, Carmarthenshire - St Peters
Mark WILLIAMS - 74 - Lathe Splitter?
Sarah WILLIAMS - 56
Dinah THOMAS - 84 (Dinah THOMAS christened at Aylburton in 1842, named after her Grandmother)

Looking good :)
Christenings and the same Meeting House
Rees THOMAS - 11 June 1805 (so an earlier Rees) - at that time, Rees & Dinah were from the Parish of Lanbody?
Rees THOMAS - (2nd Son) - 31 August 1804
Either baptised twice, or 31 August 1804 was his birthday and entered twice, or the 1804 one died :-X
-
Mis-typed
Rees THOMAS, baptism, 11 June 1801, they were living in the Parish of Lanboidy? - the next Rees is 31 August 1804
-
Are there any earlier baptisms as I've found an interesting possibility for a marriage ~
Myddfai, Carmarthenshire
29 Jan 1779 Rees Thomas to Dina Lewis both of Morthvey ( ?)
-
Had a look at the image - I think Morvey has been mistranscribed - it reads Mothvey, which could well be a (poor) English spelling of Myddfai
-
I can't see an earlier baptism before 1801 (looking on the 'net') Llanboidy, Carmarthenshire - a parish in the union of Narberth, lower division of the hundred of Derllys, County of Carmarthen.
As Rees THOMAS was a Colier - not sure where the 'pits' where (everywhere in Wales!) - as yet, no idea when he died, and if the 1841 census is the correct Dinah THOMAS - living in the Parish of St Peters aged 84 c1757)
-
I read the occupation on the 1801 baptism at Llanboidy as "Soldier"?
-
Myddfai Baptisms, parents Rees and Dinah Thomas
David, 23 Nov 1783; Lewis, 6 April 1789; Mary, 1 Jun 1786 (father's occpn Farmer)
-
Had another look at the baptism of Rees THOMAS in 1801 and the father's occupation does appear to be Soldier.
Been checking on the National Archives - and there are 'some' Rees THOMAS, but also Thomas REES and these appear to be on FindmyPast (don't subscribe)
??
Thomas REES Event 1801: Carmarthenshire, Wales - Napoleonic Ward Records 1775-1817
-
Speculating ~
Dinah - 84 in 1841 b.c 1757
This baptism ~ 17 Jan 1762 Myddfai: Diana Lewis, d of William Morgan Lewis and Ann
-
There is a burial of a Dinah Thomas of Carmarthen, Sept 4 1844 at Abergwili* , aged 90
Previous burial at Abergwili of Rees Thomas, March 9 1832, agd 82
Interesting that on the 1871, Rees (jnr) is recorded as Rees D Thomas - RG10/5296/27/24
* suburb of Carmarthen these days!
-
Baptised Lammas St Independent, parents Rees, occpn. labourer, and Dinah Thomas of the Parish of St. Peter, Borough of Carrmarthen-
Jane, 28 Nov 1802; Rees, 31 Aug, 1804; Hannah, 22 March 1807
Baptised Lammas St Independent, parents Rees, occpn. soldier, and Dinah Thomas of the Parish of Llanboidy -
Rees , 31 Aug 1801

What a wealth of information you have all given me.
It does look as though I will need to contact the Bristol Record Office and see if they have a copy of the marriage. (I am assuming that it is not available on Ancestry or FindMyPast, or one of you would have said so).
I suppose Rees was in Bristol learning to be a tailor. None of your suggested fathers was a tailor.
I am worried about where he says he was born. In 1861 and 1861 it is Carmathen. In 1871 it is Caernarvonshire. (I can only see the transcripts, not the originals on FamilySearch).
And as an extra, the information about the Walley family. Although they were all born in Chelsea they mostly all ended up in Monmouthshire.
Thank you so much for your help and I will let you know what the BRO says.

In 1871 it is Caernarvonshire. (I can only see the transcripts, not the originals on FamilySearch).
I've looked at the 1871 and it is as shown below - Carnarvon Sh. However, this is only what the enumerator thought was written on the form that Rees would have filled in. The enumerator would transcribe what he thought it was on in his book. Given that the previous 3 censuses give Carmarthen/shire. I think that is most likely. I have checked Caernarfonshire baptisms 1805 +/- 5 and none are coming up. He might have been baptised non-con but I think the the info points to Carmarthenshire.

Ancestry does have Apprenticeship records : will check for Rees D Thomas

Hello All,
I have now received the marriage record for Rees Thomas and Frances Walley.
I recognize one witness - Ann Walley - the younger sister of Frances.
I do not know the other name and actually cannot decipher it.
I am asking for help on the Handwriting Deciphering and Recognition Board.

Welshnewspapers on line

Monmouthshire Merlin, 9 Sep 1853, see column 5 - "Death by Drowning". Is this Frances' brother?
http://newspapers.library.wales
I searched for "walley", limiting search to The Monmouthshire Merlin. There's a 25 July 1862 obit. for a Thomas Walley

Thank you Capetown,
David Roberts has some positives
1. He was an accountant and so was Frances' father Thomas Walley
2. He is from Middlesex, and so was this particular Walley family
Negatives
1. I can not tie him into either the Walley or Thomas family - at the moment.
I shall let this suggestion simmer for a while

Hello hanes teulu,
I really will have to investigate this William Walley who drowned in Cape Town. The father described fits in with my Thomas Walley who was an accountant in Newport.
Some 30 years ago an elderly distant cousin, who is a descendant of, and actually knew Dinah Thomas, a daughter of the couple in the original question, told me that Dinah had brothers who were (sea going) captains. I dismissed this idea as the Thomas children were into mining, and perhaps were "captains" in a tin/coal mine.
But perhaps listening to her great grandmother talk about her family she missed the odd detail - such as was it Walley's or Thomas's she was talking about. And it was not brothers but uncles.
Or, even more shattering, it could have been my own stupidity that missed the clues.
So I am now off to look for Walley's at sea.
Thank you for the wake up call.

I began to check out a "Captain Walley" and think I found mention of a "Walley, Water Lily" sailing for Valparaiso from Gravesend early in the year of his reported death.
Best of luck with the search.

Hello Capetown,
I am so embarrassed.
That is my tree, put together some years ago.
I no longer have a subscription to Ancestry, so never look there.
And I had completely forgotten about William.

Hello- I am new to this group, and have found the posts regarding Rees David Thomas and Frances Walley of great interest. My great grandfather John Cole ( born 1832) was married to their daughter Emily Frances Thomas. I am keen to make contact with Jean Price of Rangiora as she has knowledge about this family tree. Thanks
