Title: Launceston, Tasmania - Gervase Bedford Du Croz
Post by: Gossypium on Sunday 05 November 17 20:04 GMT (UK)
Gervase Bedford Du Croz married Jessie Tasmania Massey, youngest daughter of the late T. W. Massey, Esq., of Ellerslie, on 8 Aug 1854 at Trinity Church, Launceston, Tasmania per family notice published on 23 Aug 1854 in the Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston, Tasmania.

Gervase Bedford Du Croz died on 19 Feb 1855 aged 34 in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia per death register - the age is likely a mistake unless he was 10 years old when baptised in 1830 in St Sepulchre, Holborn London. He was survived by a widow, Jessie Tasmania Du Croz and one son. I would like to know in which cemetery he was buried and the name of his son. Also I would like to know if Jessie Tasmania Du Croz remarried as she would have been quite a young widow, and when and where she died and was buried.

Jessie remarried in 1859 to Robert Power . You can search the Tasmania Names Index free of charge to access the record :

His death notice published on 20 Feb 1855 in Cornwall Chronicle informs that the funeral was held at Trinity Church, Launceston.  Does it have a graveyard in which he could have been interred?  If so, who keeps the burial registers?

Hi,
Just wondering whether you have seen our replies to your query as there is no acknowledgement at this point.

Yes, thanks Sue, so I was able to find the marriage notice in Cornwall Chronicle - Marriage on 10 Feb 1859 at St. Joseph's by the Rev. Dr. Butler, and afterwards at the Trinity Church by the Rev Mr. Hales, Robert eldest son of the Hon. T. H. Power, of Melbourne, to Jessie Tasmania DuCroz. Relict of the late Gervise DuCroz.

Someone kindly found a record of the burial on 20 Feb 1855 of Gervase Bedford Du Croz at the cemetery in Cypress Street, Launceston.  Does anyone know about this cemetery?  Apparently it is no longer a cemetery, and there are no headstones or any markers left.

Was the Cyprees Street cemetery near to Trinity Church?

I found this death notice published on 20 Feb 1855 in Cornwall Chronicle, Launceston, Tasmania page 2:
DEATHS. On the 19th instant, at his residence, Charles-street, Gervase Bedford Du Croz, Esq. The friends will meet at Trinity Church, this day (Tuesday) at 4 o'clock.

Elsewhere an obituary says "The procession extended from Trinity Church to the corner of George and Brisbane streets. Most of the places of business were either entirely or partially closed during the afternoon, and the flags of the various ships were hoisted half-mast high. It is seldom that the decease of an individual has elicited such universal feelings of regret as have been expressed at the death of Mr. Du Croz.-Launceston Examiner."

<snip>

No, it was not near Holy Trinity Church.
The Cypress Street Cemetery is visible in the 1922 aerial survey of Launceston taken by HJ King:
http://stors.tas.gov.au/144585148

The cemetery is near the bottom edge of the image, a small area bound by an incomplete rectangle of dark trees, to the left of the words "..OF THE / CITY OF LAUNCESTON.."

Without knowing accuracy of the specific figures mentioned in it,
I think it is rather brief but okay.

Here for your interest is a link to a few items about the cemetery,
published in the early 1950s in the local papers.
