Title: Mary Gillies - Dalry / Dreghorn / Irvine area
Post by: tomwylie on Tuesday 07 November 17 16:32 GMT (UK)
Married 31st December 1858 to one Thomas Fisher and thereafter lived in Dalry Ayrshire.  I am looking for parental information as there seem to be quite a few Gillies families around that area.   I havent located a place/date of her death as yet..... Any help appreciated.

Hi

Their marriage certificate should show their parents' names and other details. This is available to view online and download via ScotlandsPeople : https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  It's a pay site but will only cost 6 credits (£1.50)

Also, have you looked for her on the 1851 census?  This might give some info.

I think she died in 1871, aged 36, in Dalry.

A nice example of naming convention:

Note the step daughter to Thomas  in the 1861:  Agnes Willock, 7 ( b.c. 1854), Dreghorn  and, in 1871:

West End, Dalry
Thomas Fisher, 36, miner, b. Ireland
Mary, 36, b. Dreghorn
Agnes Willock, step daughter, 18, b. Do
Robert, 11
John, 9
Alexander, 8
Thomas, 6,
Mary, 1
All others b. Dalry

I couldnt find a death certificate for her on Scotland's People as I was hoping for confirmation of her parents names.   I would like to try to trace any siblings she might have had.   Thanks for your help- - Tom

I found it - it's the one I referred you to - 1871, aged 36, Dalry.  Her parents were John Gillies and Agnes ms Sloan

Added:

I think she died in 1871, aged 36, in Dalry.

Tom

Yes .

Some more info. It's a bit tricky but this is the best that I can find:

Agnes Sloane and John Gillies married in Irvine 28 Oct 1832

I think that this might be the family in 1841:

Montgomerie Field, Dreghorn
John Gillies, 25, Ag. Lab
John, 8
Mary, 5
Agnes, 2
David, 1
Margaret, 20

All born Ayrshire

Mother, Agnes, might have been dead by then.

It appears that John and Margaret were married by 1851 (1841 doesn't show relationships)

4 Macredies Land, Dreghorn
John Gillies, 38, Farm Labourer
Margaret, wife, 32, b. Stevenston
Margaret, 9, b. Dundonald, Ayr
John, 7
William, 2
David, 1 month
Others b. Dreghorn

Banns for a marriage between John Gillies and Margaret Lockheart  1 and 21 of July 1843 in Dreghorn and Dundonald.

John died in Dreghorn in 1884

There was a Mary Gillies, with father John and a millwright, born around the same time. The family lived Sorn in the censuses that I've looked at.

However, her mother was a Jean/Jane Stewart .John married Jean in 1834 (Banns at Sorn).  This Mary (b. Monkton on censuses) married Andrew Sawers in Sorn 1859.

I've checked the other Gillies family that you were interested in and followed them back to the early 1800s but can find no link to the Mary Gillies, b Dreghorn whose mother was Agnes Sloan.

Yes, it helps if you spread your net a little wider.  I think I was looking too close.   Marion Cochrane Gillies was born in 1896 to John Gillies and Mary Miller who were married in Dalry in 1880.   There are too many John Gillieses to be absolute certain but perhaps Marion Gillies's father and my great great GM were cousing or brother and sister or something - I wont pursue that any further as they would at best be on the very periphery of my interest.   I am spending too much money on Scotland's People......   Thanks for all your help.......

Montgomeryfield was the name of a coalpit / ironmine so perhaps you are not far out with this one - daughter Mary could be my GGGgrandmother......  thanks
