Title: Missing Leonard sisters
Post by: Nigel Porter on Wednesday 08 November 17 21:33 GMT (UK)
My GG Grandmother Susanna Asher moved to London between 1861 (as on the 1861 census in Howell, Lincs) and 1865, when her first daughter, Anna, was born in Islington.  She had three more daughters, Jane b.1867, Mary Ann b. 2/1/1868 and Louisa b. 13/9/1869 before she died of smallpox on 29/8/1871.  They appear on the 1871 census in Camden with their father John Leonard, but after that, following their mothers death the family are split up.  I've traced Mary Ann and Louisa, as they went to Heckington, Lincs (Susanna's home village) where Mary Ann married and had a large family and Louisa died in 1877.  However I can't find either Anna or Jane after 1871, so can anyone help?  I'm also struggling to find John Leonard?

Thanks

Could Jane be the 1877 death in Lambeth shown on freebmd?

Their full names appear to be Amelia Jane b 1866 and Annie Maria born 1864 - both in Islington

There is a marriage for a Ann Maria Leonard, father John, labourer, to Arthur John Perren father John, labourer at St James Bethnal Green 25 June 1882, she was 18 giving a birth year of 1864. He was full age.
Witness S. Cranmer, (E)? Leonard.
No street address given just Bethnal Green.

Other clues needed for Amelia Jane.
There is one buried Victoria Park listed in Non Conformist burials 27 September 1869 age 4 of Hawley ? Street, Bethnal Green.

Another Amelia Jane Leonard gave birth to Ernest Leonard at Queen Charlotte's Hospital 18 September 1883, located St John's Wood.

Thanks for the replies and I've checked out the Amelia Jane b 1866 in Islington and I think she is the same as one baptised in 1870, along with 3 siblings, but with parents John and Jane, so not mine.  As both girls were alive on the 1871 census we can discount the death in 1869.  I'll investigate the other leads and I'm trying to find out more about John Leonard, as the girls may have been with his family after their mother's death,

There's a Jane age 15 in 1881 pauper inmate St pancras industrial school

Also a George Leonard age 16 so possibly siblings and not your Jane.

GRO online search for Leonard births with mmn Asher shows Amelia Jane and Annie Maria.

Can’t see any Asher/Leonard marriage

I think Amelia Jane and Annie Maria as identified by CaroleW are my girls, but their names seem to change with each official record.  The births are registered as Amelia Jane and Annie Maria, but on the 1871 census they are they are simply Jane and Anna.  A year previously I think I have the girls all being baptised on the same day (April 20th) at St Luke's West Holloway, as there are Hannah Maria, Mary Ann, Louisa and Amelia Jane which seems too coincidental, but the parents are John and Jane, not Susanna?  However the address on this record is 17 Balmoral Grove and  on the birth certificate for Louisa (13/7/1869) the address is 3 Blamoral Grove, so again another strong link.  The final curiosity is that the mothers maiden name on all the birth records is Asher, but Susanna married William Wright in 1856 (he died in 1857), so not sure why she did not use this?  I'll order the BC's for Amelia and Annie to clarify that part and keep searching for the post 1871 stuff.

Thanks again for all the help

Your opening post makes no mention of Susanna marrying William Wright.  You refer to her as Susanna Asher “moving to London between 1861 and 1865” which gives the impression that Susanna Asher married John Leonard

When a widow remarries - although she may remarry under her married name - any births for children born to the second marriage will always show her actual birth surname as mothers maiden name

Still no marriage - so John Leonard was married to Jane when the children were baptised  ???

Does the birth certificate for Louisa 13/7/1869 give mother Susanna or Jane?

On both BC's she is Susannah Leonard, formerly Asher and on her death certificate she is Susannah Leonard wife of John Leonard and that was on 29th August 1871.  I've looked under both Wright and Asher and can find no marriages anywhere.  There is no middle name at all on her BC, so can't even use Jane as a middle name?

Is there a John Leonard marriage to a Jane then or a death for Jane Leonard paving the way for Susannah?

When did Mr Wright die - just wondering if there was room for her to have married again in between  :-\

Mr Wright died in 1857, within a year of their marriage, so time to remarry, but I've not found anything.  I've not looked for a John/Jane marriage, but as Susannah is on the two BC's I have then I think this is unlikely.

Well I've got the BC's for the other girls and the details are;

Annie Maria b. 20th May 1864, 1 Bowman's Place North, Islington
Amelia Jane b. 24th February 1866, 10 London Street, York Road, Islington

On both the parents are John Leonard and Susannah Leonard formerly Asher and he's a railway shunter, but I've yet to find him in the railway records.  Given the confirmation of the names I'll look at the earlier leads for the marriage of Anne Maria and birth to Amelia.
