Title: Help to find a birth record in Paris January 1871 Please
Post by: Wendi on Thursday 09 November 17 17:47 GMT (UK)
Hello!

Can anyone advise me how I would go about finding a birth record, during the Seige of Paris 1870 -1871 ? or even if such a thing would exist.  I have an exact date of birth, but looking for parentage, otherwise this line of my family finishes here  :'(

The newborn and mother returned to England after the Seige finished.

Thanks
Wendi

Of course, with pleasure. you can go and search in the "Archives de Paris", they are digitized. But , many of them were burnt in the burning of the Hotel De Ville (Town Hall) during the Commune  (civil riot).

Can you give the data you have?
I will search for you if you don't read french.

Merci joger  :)

My reading of French is poor, so I will thank you if you can try for me please.

Marie Winifred Brady was born in France 13th January 1871 to Marie Emelia Brady nee Derick (could be english spelling as the Derick comes from her english wedding certificate) her father Louis Derick.

The family story is that Marie Emelia Brady ate rats during the Seige of Paris, therefore I am assuming her daughter was born there.  She also remembered seeing the Air Balloons flying out of the city.  - aren't family stories lovely!

Any help you can give joger will be much appreciated.

It certainly is true for the rats.

Till now I have not found any Brady, Derick, or Derrick, born in Paris ( 1862-1872), in any of the 20 "arrondissements" of Paris.
But maybe the child was registered at the consulate and not at the french Town Hall .
Or the child was born in a suburb of Paris and not intra muros.

Ancestry has the registers for English BMD abroad, have a look there if you can , or ask for a look-up.

I'll try 1873 and after ,tomorrow.

Any clue about her year of birth , approximately?

Morning joger, and thank you.

Please do not trouble yourself with 1873, I had overlooked the fact that her birth was probably registered in the overseas register, I will search that.

With regard to Marie Emelia Derick, she was French, born about 1848 in St. Azair, France.  This information from various sources, but not verified.  She married in London in 1870 and from that wedding certificate comes her fathers name Louis Derick.

Kind regards
Wendi

Ok, Saint-Azaire does not exists, apparently, it should be Saint-Nazaire.

Ooh! Thank you  :)

Evidently it was not compulsory to register a birth until 1875 so perhaps the 1871 birth was never recorded. I could not find her in the overseas registers.

Thanks for your interest and time joger!

It was compulsory since 1539( king Francois 1er).

  :-\ but not in England.

Then Marie Derick's birth would be registered!

Do you have any advise as to how I would find it?

How exciting! Thanks joger.

Marie Winifred Brady has certainely been registered, but where and when ? I should say in the french registers, when one of the parents was french, the birth  was usually registred in the french registers.
I will have another look at the parisian registers.

Could it be possible that  Marie Brady (born NGS ? France),married with James Brady(born Ireland) , living in Sheepshed, Leicestershire, wth their children Mary , 10 in 1881, Cecilia 8 , James L 6, Elen M 1in 1881 Census ,was your Marie Emélia?, and the daughter marie was Marie Winifred ?

Family Search Census 1881

Ask for a look up in the 1991 and 1901 or more Census, to cross check the fornames

Good thing , but for NGS I don't know , it should be the name of a town  but of course there is no such town in France . That is why I suggest to check with other Census which might be more precise but I cannot do it myself , I am not registered in paying sites ( 1881 census is free on familysearch )

Is Mary Winifred Brady married quarter march 1894 district Barton with Armstrong Edward or Benjamin John Buckley your Marie Winifred (FreeBMD)?

Yes to both joger!

I have searched far and wide, all census, marriage, death, everything I can think of. The only consistant is France.

Thanks for your interest.

I just found in Census 1891 (free access on familysearch, silly me) , in 1891 she is Maria Brady ,head of the family, married but no trace of James , children cecilia, james L, ellen M and Michael Brady Grandfather (James's of course)born in Ireland, living in Barton, Lancashire.
She seems to be dead in 1901, was she?

I will try to find Marie Emelia (or Emelie or Emilie) Derique ( Derick ,or Derrick , but I bet on Derique )somewhere in France.

I'll let you know.

How do you know St-Azair? on what sort of document?

I found no Derique, Derick... in Saint-Nazaire 1848 1849 ...

Hi joger

It's been a while since I revisited my research on Marie Derick, you have asked a valid question and I will track down the answer.  Meanwhile the NGS is a enumerators note and not an original entry, it actually reads (I think, looking at it again) NES as in Not English Subject !

Have no fear, in 1891 James was in a different household on the night of the census and in 1901 they were not living in England, but still very much alive, he till 1910 and she till 1920 !

Now off to find St. Axair!

Of course...., I thought it was an abbreviation’ but I did not know for what.Good Thing to know.
Try to find the more you can about Derick and I may find her ( and more), except if she was born in Paris ( remember that the registers burnt during the Commune). It will be easier to find her if she was born anywhere else. But ,there are 36 000 Towns and villages in France .Some clues would help.
Have a Nice day.

Hi joger

I looked back and the St. Azair was in notes that my father left me, so not a verified piece of info ! I also came across a note regarding Marie Leo Caddie or something that sounds like that..... not much else to report, not much else I can say.

Today, here is Armistice Day. It minds me to thank France for their care of the graves of our fallen.

For now, Bye
