Title: Confirmation of text and help with names (if possible)
Post by: EeyoreBlue on Friday 10 November 17 14:11 GMT (UK)
I believe the attached says:

Robert Dixon from the Park of Haltwhistle in the County of Northumberland
Hannah Scott from the Parish XXXXXX Lanercost in teh County Cumberland they being here and declared themselves single Persons was married this twelfth day of Nov (year looks like 1856 but may be 1836 which would fit better) by me Simon XXXXX
Robert Dixon
Hannah Scott

The names I can decipher are:

Ann XXXXX
Sarah Sowerby

Any help with the bits I've missed out, I'd be very grateful for.

Thanks

Simon Long or Lang  - this might help with him -

Simon LANG was a "clergyman" at Gretna Green.  He married one of my ancestors (twice).

EDIT: Censuses show him to have been a Weaver.

Thank you.

I'm 90% certain this is my family, however, if the year is 1856, it's impossible, as Robert Dixon died in 1841, but all other details fit. :-\

I think it's more likely to be 1836

Added -where did you get it from?

By trying to work out the direction of the pen strokes, I think it could be 1836.

This is actually confirmed by the images at Ancestry:
(a) this document is filed/filmed near others that are more clearly 1836
(b) there's also an image of a register book where there's no doubt at all about the year

Just been looking at the Ancestry image - def 12th November 1836

Added - and, as it was Gretna, it is most likely Simon Lang, as Geoff and I suggested .
