Title: Willaim GIBSON jnr 1820-1880 and William GIBSON snr
Post by: SantaSandy on Saturday 11 November 17 17:52 GMT (UK)
I would appreciate any help in pinning down two William GIBSONs. The second was the father of Ann Jane GIBSON born 1843 in Corfu (I am assuming her parents were there as part of the British Army). She married John CAHILL in Kingwilliamstown in 1864. I have had various leads but being a common name am not sure if I have the right ones.

Some things are confusing me, so I’ve got a few questions:

Which Corfu is meant here ... Corfu Greece or Corfu New York?
If the second William Gibson is the father of Ann, does that mean that William jnr 1820-1880 is her brother? Or do the snr and jnr not necessarily mean that these 2 people are father and son?
Who were the spouses of these two Williams?
Where did William jnr die in 1880?
Does the widower William Gibson who dies in King Williams Town in 1874 (filed in 1875) fit into this story anywhere?

Thanks for your response. I have limited information on the two William's. I believe they are father and son. The Corfu is in Greece that was a British Territory at the time with a military presence. Because William GIBSON is a common name and using the free weekend have found a large range from England, Scotland and Ireland. I have received the death notice you referring which could be senior and another death notice in Dundee Natal in 1909 which could be junior. I was also told that their was a William GIBSON in the Cape in 1817. Ann Jane GIBSON married John CAHILL (who's grandfather born in Ireland  had been in the Military in Cape Town.) He was born in Fort Beaufort . I hope this makes it a bit clearer.

The 1820 William GIBSON Jnr is Jane Ann's father.  I also found that a John CAHILL died on Corfu. Jane Ann's husband died at an early age and she remarried and had more children.

Apologies for the disjointed replies. Ann Jane GIBSON second husband was James LANG who she married in Kingwilliamstown. I also notice that William GIBSON Snr is a witness to her CAHILL marraige. I don't have the wives of either William GIBSON.

I'd seen that Ann's death mentions the 2 husbands, her dad, but no mother. Bit of a nuisance!

But, why the 1880 in the 1820-1880? Or was that just a typo?

I obviously found that as his dates on Ancestry without having confirmation for either. I think I will take up the cheap offer on Armed Forces for a month or so to trawl through the many William GIBSONs that they have service records on. The man who died they said he was a labourer but that may be after his military. I have entered her second marriage and children to see if it helps. Thanks for helping me clarify. I have lots of probables but short of definites. Appreciated
