Joseph Coates
married
Elsie Newton
Leek 1925
They did indeed have 2 children
We have to be very careful here as the 2 siblings might still be alive
Are you intending to go back or did you just want to know about the siblings?, you need to let us know what you already know so that we don't duplicate information

www.gro.gov.uk
This site is free to register, it is easy to use, all you need is the surname and mother's maiden name and a year plus or minus 2 years either side, and you can check for children born to the following, if you enjoy doing your own research this is very rewarding, it is straightforward, start from about 1893 when they married
John Joseph Coates
married
Sarah Jane Bowyer
1893 Leek, they had at least 4 children by 1901
Raymond Joseph died 1998 Sandwell aged 70, showing his birth date as 01/03/1928
If you have family still alive they are the best source of information, grab it all whilst you can
Happy hunting

Thank you for all your help I'll keep going. Unfortunately both my grandfather and his sister are no longer with us so can't find a lot out from them but it's fun trawling and finding information slowly
-
Here's a start for you then, please check them against the GRO indexes and then you will see how it works

I believe
George COATES full age fth Joseph
married
Ann Elizabeth GOLDEN aged 20 fth Thomas
09/08/1868
Leek
The only way to confirm this is to try to purchase the relevant certificate if you couldn't get to the record office
John Joseph born 1871 MMN Golder
Mary Jane 1873 Goulden
Alice Ann 1874 Goulden
but if followed from marriage to 1871 census the children listed are under mother's maiden name of GOULDEN and GOLDER , also Ann becomes Hannah
If you are able to get to the nearest records office and look at the church register and they were baptised in C of E you would have a rewarding time

The 1868 marriage entry is available to view on FindMyPast.
As is John Joseph's marriage in 1893 - father George said to be deceased. A witness is Percy Coates.
Percy Coates (father George is deceased) marries Mary Ellen Pickering - 20 March 1897. Mary Jane Coates is a witness.

Thank you so much it's amazing how quickly things can unravel.can I ask why would there be 2 names goulden and golder. Is George the brother old John joseph or the father I've got a tad confused sorry
-
Not quite sure where Louisa Maud found the 1868 marriage entry - image definitely states that George Coates was aged 23, Ann Elizabeth was aged 20 - both worked in the Silk Industry. Both made their mark in the Register - Coates/Golden, and so Golder/Goulden could be down to interpretation by others later.
-
Can't remember where I found the 1868 marriage but it did say born circa 1845, no age was shown for George, only his wife aged 20 but I will agree I have found it on other sites since, we know George was born circa 1845

My Family came from Staffordshire also and the names, match some of my family member names. The family reuses names often so I responded to your email.
My G.Grandfather James H. Coates was born 1860 in Leek and Lowe married Matilda P. Newton born 1860 in Hanley.
James H. Coates father was Joseph Coates born 1840 in Consall
Joseph Coates father was born 1800 in Ipstones
The family was very poor many of the grave sites have no markers when I visited Staffordshire England, Silk and pottery where made it this area.
My Grandfather John Coates moved to the United States in 1899-1900 with his family as a kid. His father died just after coming to the United States. The kids that could work went to work and the others where put up for adoption. Many of the children died after James H. Coates death.
Matilda P. Newton’s father was a Victor in the Church of England.

Hi Jim thanks for getting in touch, my great grandmother was called Elsie Newton and my great grandad was joseph Coates does their names ring the bell? My great great grandfather was John joseph Coates

There was an Elsie Newton who was born in 1897 in Stoke on Trent and another born in Wolverhampton in 1896 both are located in Staffordshire. My Coates and Newton family came from Staffordshire also. My Coates side came from a small town called Coates town which is near Hollinsclough. My Newton side lived near by and originally came from Cheshire county. I followed the Coates line, my James H. Coates came from Leek Low his father Joseph came from Ipstones. James H Coates married Matilda P. Newton.
