Title: Hastings query?
Post by: Finley 1 on Saturday 18 November 17 12:57 GMT (UK)
I am researching my Cobley family at the moment... and oh my  they are confusing.. one or the other of them.

AM STUCK on  Benjamin Cobley bn circa 1840 as shown on the 1851 census return - he is down as Grandson with the family of Richard and Elizabeth  ( 1851 transcribed as CALLEY !!!! is it me ????)

To follow him forward in life... his surname changes to Hastings..
I couldn't find a birth for Benjamin Cobley - but did for Benjamin Hastings.
So presume he is the illegitmate son of Ann Cobley 1807.... have sent for his birth PDF so 3 days or so, for that.

The thing is when I tried to trace Ann Cobley.... absolutely deep dark pool of mush ! :) the only Ann married to a Hastings (if she ever was) is Ann Waring?

So I thought this was something maybe someone could give a hand with... so few brain cells left these days..

ps I don't come on here as often as I used to  ---- and I MISS you all so this is also a BIG HELLO :) xxxxx

Is this the birth that you sent for?

HASTINGS, BENJAMIN       MMN: WARING  1840  D Quarter in LEICESTER UNION  Volume 15  Page 106

and is this the 1841 "grandparent" https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQYG-HY6

this may be worth a look at the original image (1841 ) Eastens == Hastings?

yes !!!

so I was right in my original assumption that he was Benjamins son !!! and Ann EASTENS / HASTINGS

was in a relationship with Benjamin Cobley..

You just cannot BEAT Roots for finding the answers

Much appreciated... :)   off to find that census

etc

Cheers..

Wow
that was not easy finding the 1841 of the family on Ancestry

transcriptions due to illegible writing were so varied and it was on two pages... but I went with the folio no etc  and found it was 12  NOT 32 so eventually got there... omgooodness.. well worth it.
Now have to find out how Ann Waring became Ann Eastens/Casten/Hastings etc... :)

really appreciate your help -

William Hastings and Ann seem to have had several children, all baptised at St Mary de Castro:-

Sarah 1827
Henry   1829
Ann Maria 1832
Henry 1835
William Henry 1837
Edwin 1839 - in GRO index mmn Wareing

William and children, Ann and William, may be on the 1841 census at Red Cross Street, St Mary, Leicester, with Kezia Orchard.

In 1851, the same William is a widower with son, William, and lodger/housekeeper, Kezia Orchard, at Wide Yard, 16, Oxford Street, St Mary's.
