Hello, this is my very first post. Trying to find info on Luke Prendergast born Ireland approx 1818. Died Hull 1848. His daughter Ann Prendergast lived 3 MIddle Street when she got married 1872 , would like to know name of her Mother and how to find who else live s in the house. Any help would be most welcome . Thank you ... hope I have done all this correct..
-
Hi Chistine!
Welcome to Rootschat!
What else do you know about Ann/family.
eg where was she 1871/1881 ( census refs )
Save everyone ALL doing the same thing at the same time . . . . .

FreeBMD does not carry a marriage for Ann in 1872 ?
-
Hi, thanks for reply . Ann married Michael Lydon St Charles Church Hull 1872, marriage certificate shows Luke Prendergast as her Father , and they lived at 3 MIddle Street Hull both born in Ireland . Cannot find 1871 census to check who else lived at address . Hoping to find Ann's Mother and more about Luke .. I have tried checking bmd and find my past, not sure why I can't go any further. I purchased the marriage certificate so I know all my info so far is correct
-
. . . . but you know her birth date and where she was born ( Ireland 1859 )
?
-
I saw a previous post on here from about 2009 , somebody else trying to find a John Prindergast living at 3 MIddle Street same year.. Being new to this site I could not follow the thread to see the outcome, as I am just trying to find my way round the site... looks great. all this info and knowledge that people have.. so much to learn
-
. . . . . but you have a public tree WITH info . . . . .
Ann born Mayo, 3x children, 3x census entries.

Hi Christine
As you can see, there are people on this site willing to help.
Help us to help you by telling us what you already have.
Please do not make us research it all again? Separately.
Ray

Yes I know the name of the children , and again I get confused as The family tree site that I am on show her as born 1859 but her marriage certificate shows her being 17 in 1872 . Thanks for trying to help
-
Start by telling us all the detail on the marriage cert.

For those with access, here is the tree . . . . .

Thank you Ray for advising me and thanks Maureen for showing link to thread . marriage certificate shows Ann living 3 MIddle Street hull aged 17, born in Ireland, Father is Luke Prendergast . Marriage to Michael Lydon also born Ireland 1848 he lived Trippet Street Hull , his Father is James Lydon
-
Hi
Date of marriage?
Mary Lydon looks like she was registered as Prendergast 8c 486 Bolton 1877 Jun
-
I have just been reading the thread that Maureen sent the link to , I believe the John Prendergast marrying into the Goodner family is probably Ann's brother ( Luke's son) the thread concentrates a lot on the Goodner family... I wondered why I couldn't find a 1871 census for that address with the info on
-
Thanks Ray , date of marriage was 25 July 1872
-
and where?
-
St Charles Church Hull
-
On the 1871 census look for a John WANDBY born 1816 Cottingham. That's the 3 Middle Street addy. Doesn't help with Ann but I'm pretty sure that the John SMITH ::) living there is her brother John P*gast.
He and wife Catherine seem to go by SMITH after their marriage.
I wonder about the P*g*st family headed by Mary in Sculcoates?
Maureen

1872 QSep Sculcoates 9d 285 Michael Lydon / Ann Prendergast
Why could I not find this earlier?
-
Thanks Maureen , will have a look at that. Sorry Ray not sure 9d 285 , how did you find that out please, also what is it used for . Feel I have a lot more to learn
-
Hi ( Hi Chrissie? ) :)
Don't apologise.
FreeBMD.org.uk ( enter what you know )
Ray
Answer? Recorded as PRENDERGEST not Prendergast
-
Thanks again Ray for your help
-
Hello,
Do you have this? Maureen mentioned the family headed by Mary but not sure if she is referring to 1871. This is 1861
1861. 3582/27/48
9 Friths Ct, Machell Street
Mary Pinderguest 32 yrs b Ireland
Thomas Pinderguest 13 yrs b Ireland
Bridget Pinderguest 9 yrs b Hull
Ann Pinderguest 6 yrs b Ireland
Plus several boarders -O’Brien family, Eagan family and Patrick Meigh
Heywood

Not seen that before, thank you Heywood. Where was this found , I think this is definitely Ann from my tree. I have Ann and husband Michael Lydon living Machell Street once married
-
I transcribed it but here it is on Family Search

You have posted Luke’s death as 1848. Should that read 1858?
There is a baptism here, Bekan Parish, Mayo for a Thomas but it is December, 1851 which wouldn’t match the age in 1861.

The 1881 is interesting:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27B-73YY
any idea who Hugh LYDON is?
Maureen
-
Yes should be 1858, so Mary is widowed in 1861. Thank you so much, that has really helped me. I have also tried to do a lot of searching for my Irish ancestors especially the Lydons . I know they came from Swineford County Mayo , I cannot find any records from there . I was told a lot of Irish ones had been lost , but seeing your link give some me hope I can find out more there. thanks again Heywood ... first time on here and it's been great . Lots of help from different people
-
No Maureen , not come across a Hugo Lydon, they all seem to be Michael and James in my tree. But it's very interesting him being a lodger with Mary in 1881. He could be a brother of Ann's husband Michael
-
The ages of the older children vary somewhat between 1861; 1871 and 1881 censuses.
1871 shows Mary Pendergist aged 7 years.
1881 Mary is 18 yrs.
She is shown as a daughter to Mary snr and presumably is illegitimate.
GRO index shows Mary Prendergest b 1864 with mother’s maiden name Machon.
This would also discount the Mayo baptism I linked.
-
I often find the ages seem to differ between some census , yet the same people live in the same house 10 years later !! I was trying to decipher the baptism link you sent and was thinking it was showing Mary's maiden name starting with a M .. yes young Mary would have been illegitimate as Luke had passed away 1858. Great info ..
-
Just been looking at the 1861 census , it states Mary's daughter Bridget 9 years old born in Hull , then daughter Ann aged 6 born in Ireland. This seems strange to me, I don't understand why they would have gone back to Ireland at this time . As it was time of the great famine .. any ideas please. Also I can't seem to find 1851 census for Luke or Mary
-
Yes I noticed that and she still gives Hull as her birthplace after marriage. :-\
I can’t see a birth though.
-
I have now found Bridget Prendergast who died in 1879 , birth year 1853. About same year as Bridget from my tree, so not sure if Bridget Prendergast marrying James Callaghan is right one. She gives 1857 as birth year.. its all confusing . I suppose only way forward is buying bmd certificates
-
Good morning! (here)
I wonder if the Bridget who died in 1879 was the Bridget McKINNITH that Thomas married in 1876? He's listed as widowed on the 1881. There just aren't too many Bridget P*nd*g*sts in the area at the time .
Did you ever mention who the witnesses to the marriage of Ann and Michael were? (Sorry if I missed it.)
Yes,some certs would probably help.
Good luck!
Maureen

I was hoping you would have followed her but she lives in the right area and has the right birth details (well more or less re year of birth ;))
-
Bridget and James Callaghan also have a son Luke -forgot to say.
-
Again thanks Maureen and Heywood. Would like to see what it says on 1851 census but can't find it ?? Also no mention of Luke ( Mary's husband, dad of Bridget, Ann and Thomas)
-
They don’t seem to be in Hull in 1851 :-\
