In 1831 my gtgtgrandfather Joseph McNaughton married Helen Falconer in Duddingston, Edinburgh. He had many children and died in 1853. The 1851 census states that he was born in Dumbarton in 1807. I know that his birth took place in December 1806 and that he worked, as a young man, in the north of Ireland as a gardener, from where he fled in the late 1820s, changing his name to McNaughton.It is sure that his original name was McNaught. Does anyone have any information on his birth, which I have not found in Dunbartonshire?
