My 2nd great grandmother Margaret married George Smith in 1850 in liverpool
And lived in Birkenhead. Til her death in 1877

But I don't know where her parents James and Mary Yates lived or died after 1851

I haven't found her siblings James and Jane either

There is a Chelsea pensioner record for James Yates age 40 in 1831

it's on Fold so I can't see original

Were sailors included in Chelsea pensioner records ?

Thanks so much solid rock

I had  1875 as death date for James Yates from a relatives tree but couldn't find a record .
Or the correct James in 1861 or 1871 census

Where did you find those  baptisms ?

I.ll look into the Congleton death possibilities.

No - Chelsea pensions were for the Army. Royal Naval pensions were through Greenwich but even then I suspect a Master Mariner would be nothing to do with the Royal Navy.

Thanks Adrian and solidrock

It looks like the Congleton death s are a different family connected to Uriah Yates and Sarah Oates
They seem to be a family of shoemakers based in Smallwood Astbury Cheshire

I got interested that Jabez Yates  had a father in law called James Yates of the right age but he turned out to also be from Smallwood   a labourer  age 59 in 1851 with wife Fanny  and daughter Sarah age 20

so my St. Oswald Yates family are still a mystery except for Margaret my great great  grandmother.
If The 1812 marriage to Mary Pegg is correct I wonder why the first child isn't until 1820

Some trees on Ancestry have mother's name as  Mary Ellen Watermann  no sources
Others have Mary Ann Glazbrook but that is a mistranscription from 1851 census she seems to be his neighbour

I'm looking at criminal records ..of  James Yates to see if I could find a likely candidate
...i.ve found one in 1816 for larceny ....in the acquittal column it says "no bills"

It's at Lancashire courts and no information about age or origin of the criminals ..

Surprise .
There is a Mary Yates born to a James and Mary Yeates ..in june1812

And a liverpool marriage for Mary Yates to Richard golden Glazebrook various spellings

Then a Mary Glazebrook age 40 in 1851  b St. Oswald's  living in Grange lane Birkenhead
Married to Richard Glazebrook bookmaker .

he must be a brother to the gentleman John Glazbrook +( wife Mary Ann )
neighbours to the Yates family' in 1851

The Birkenhead address links with sister Margaret

But still no sign of James and Mary after 1851

Hi, a possibility that James was dead by 1861.
I found a Mary Yates, age 70, b. Chester, widow, as a visitor in 1861 at Trallwng Ollen & Tyddan Prydd, Montgomeryshire, Wales. Head of household was Robert Baker, his wife was Ellen age 29 b. Chester.
There is a possible marriage in Liverpool in 1853 Dec Qtr of Robert Baker to Ellen Yates, ref. 8b 418 on FreeBMD.

Have you got these other children?

Elizabeth Yates.  baptised     14 Mar 1814, St Oswald, Chester.   father James,  mother Mary.

Maria Yates.  baptised   31 Oct 1817, St Oswald, Chester.   father James,  mother Mary.

I'm thinking that Maria maybe Mariah Smith married to John on the 1841 but I can't find a marriage yet.

Solid rock thanks no I hadn't come across those girls ..as.they weren't in the 1841 census

Rays find in Wales looks very hopeful with  Baker children named after James and Mary

I wonder how   Ellen YATES met a  Robert BAKERcanal operator from Wales !

there is a visitor from Chester on the Wales  1871 census aged 18
 Martha ADAMS
She could be a neice of Ellen so a clue to another sisters marriage

Maybe the right John & Maria Smith plus children in Renshaw St, Liverpool in 1851.
Is John Smith related to your George Smith? Could be a possibility.

Had a thought that as James & Mary seem to have been born and lived in Chester, maybe they were buried there too!
Overleigh Cemetery, Chester, Grave no R5061 has the following burials:
Surname   Forename           Age   Date of Death   Date of Burial
Bowden   Sarah           39 y   11/05/1873   15/05/1873
Parry           Henry Greening   25 y   10/03/1876   13/03/1876
Yates           James           70 y   15/04/1858   19/04/1858
Yates           Mary                   79 y   23/07/1870   27/07/1870

Seem to tally with the death cert refs I suggested. James was a mariner.

Wow Ray you are a super sleuth

Meanwhile I looked for connections between John Smith b 1812 Liverpool who married Maria Yates

He was a bookkeeper and timber merchant

My George b 1826  was a poulterer he had no siblings called John
But I did find out that his birth in Great Boughton was also at Oswald's. And I realised he was there in 1841 before marrying Margaret in 1850
From 1852 they lived in Birkenhead and had 8 girls and 1 boy

This family has a lot of females

.Maria and John Smiths daughter Mary Ellen Smith dressmaker of house aged 40
With her unmarried siblings Elizabeth aged 37 milliner
Emma 35 dressmaker and William 25 commercial clerk

James Yates and Margaret had 8 children ..only one son James Yates b 1822

*   PARRY  Henry  Greening seems  odd

Or could this be a child
Of Elizabeth .Jane or Sarah Yates

Post by: brigidmac on Wednesday 22 November 17 20:54 GMT (UK)
I believe
Henry Greening Parry was the husband of their grandaughters Martha Adams ..B abt 1855 Chester

Now  to find who she is the daughter of .

My tree on ancestry is now wrong because I thought he was the son of Elizabeth Yates * I'm rewriting it.
A tree on ancestry says his mother died in 1851 so Elizabeth PARRY is his father henry.s second wife ....all getting very complicated and taking me away from the YATES family

Thanks for the useful link to  the overleigh cemetery  site

I've browsed it a bit.

In 1871 Henry G PARRY age 20 was a boarder a timber merchant  in Cheshire

Martha Adams aged 18 was with her aunt Ellen and uncle Robert BAKER a canal operator
Maybe they met when he delivered wood

The couple married in 1874 in Wales but he died two years later .Henry greening Parry .s mother died when he was young and he may not have been close to his family his half siblings were a decade younger than him.

I think I've found James Yates junior
He.s married to Ann from Mellwych ?  Wales

This James turns up in Nantwich Birmingham and Stockport

As a canal trader

A wharfinger ....could be something to do with canals ?

A Wesleyan preacher. ....is there a way of knowing or guessing religion from how children's births are recorded ??

He lived til at least 1891 and had 10 children !   Which also fits in with the other fertile YATES
There don't seem to be many child deaths through the generations

That would explain why they called their son James Peters YATES

And he followed in his father's footsteps and was a wessleyan preacher in1911
