Title: William Robinson married Jane Harwood 1804 Yarm. William's baptism?
Post by: Worlygigger on Wednesday 22 November 17 21:37 GMT (UK)
William Robinson married Jane Harwood 1804 Yarm but I have not been able to locate a baptism for William or find out who his parents were. He was born about 1775 but not in Yarm or Richmond where he subsequently ended up. Maybe in a surrounding parish to Yarm (which was Jane's parish, of course). Could someone help because I live in Suffolk and the Mormons website is not much use. I can offer some help with Suffolk records if required!

According to FindMyPast there are 84 baptisms for a William Robinson in the North Riding of Yorkshire between 1770 and 1780. Unfortunately he may not have even come from Yorkshire as Yarm is not that far from the border with Durham.

I'm not on FindMyPast - could you cut and paste the 84 Williams and send them to my address (*)

People did not move around very much at all in the 18th century. I'd be very surprised if William came from a parish more than two parishes away from Yarm. I'd like to eliminate North Yorkshire parishes before I head over the border into Durham. So the North Yorkshire results are a place for me to start from. Thanks for your help.

Sorry but as much as I like to help people I think that is asking a bit much. I'd have to open every one, download then upload and I haven't got that much free time.

If you could let me know your exact search criteria - did you use "North Riding of Yorkshire" or "North Yorkshire" or something else?

There is one in Kirklevington in 1774 that looks a good likelihood.  I'm from the area and the two are very close - I used to go clubbing in both places back in the day   ;D

Thanks for that, Jomot, I know the area well (The Kirk, etc). I suppose I'd need to find some other evidence to support the possibility such as a settlement certificate. Since he was "of this parish (Yarm)" when he married in 1804, there must be some written evidence of his move from Kirklevington to Yarm as he clearly "belonged" to Yarm by then. Could you possibly tell me the names of his parents and if Jane Harwood was also baptised in Kirklevington?

As far as I am aware,to be "of the Parish" it was only necessary to have lived there for a few weeks, long enough for the Banns to be read. This meant that if the couple marrying were from two different Parishes they did not have to pay for Banns to be read in both Churches.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but just because he married in Yarm and it said "of the Parish" it didn't necessarily mean he was living there permanently - he could have come from anywhere.

I'd recommend K.D.M. Snell's book on Parish and Belonging: Community, Identity and Welfare in England and Wales 1700-1950. It is a weighty tome and a long read but it clearly sets out the laws regarding belonging to one's parish and what the term 'settlement' meant, particularly during the 18th century.
