I am trying to establish exactly what the occupation of Gardener employing 3 men means?? I know he’s responsible for the 3 men but what is likely to be his job?? Or is this another way of saying farm worker? If he wAs working on an Estate could he be a Gardener in charge of fruit/ veg / flowers?
I have tried googling it but to no avail?
Any help would be very much appreciated

I've found various ancestors claiming gardener as occupation on censuses around then. In one case, as he lived in the lodge of a large house, it was fairly easy, he was the Head Gardener of the estate, and had others under him. Another seems later to have been what we might now call a market gardener. Another went from describing himself as an "Ag Lab" to a gardener from one census to the next - and the next one he was a grocer!!
Try looking backwards and forwards in the censuses, may help a bit, if the address doesn't help as it helped me.

I would hazard a guess that your man worked at a Lodge or Estate, and that he has in charge of those gardeners who maintained the grounds surrounding the "house".
I, too, have a Gardener residing in Norfolk.
One of the Directories (1856) stated that he was "Gardener and Steward" at Marham Lodge. 1841 he was a Gardener in Sussex, then 1851 Gardener in North Elmham, and 1861 until his death he was a Nurseryman and Seedsman in North Elmham.

I have been recently researching a family where the father was listed as a gardener in one census and in the subsequently as a market gardener/nurseyman,
I would have thought that if your relative worked for a estate that he would not have described as having employees as they would all have been employed by the landowner - But I could well be wrong :-\

The one of mine had three gardeners lodging with him, all younger, and presumably working on the same estate. All must've been employed by the person who owned the estate?

Thank you all, your input is very much appreciated, these ancestors didn't make it easy for us trying to find information on them.

Very true.
Later there might be trade directory entries for him... don't know about 1850s.

I'm not absolutely sure, now, how I located the entry for my gardener - Joseph Archbell:
Francis White's History, Gazeteer and Directory of Norfolk - 1854.
