Hello There,
The above person became a Police Constable before the 1851 Census. He was a brother of one of my 3x Great Grandmothers, and lived in Lincoln all his life. He became a Police Inspector by the time of the 1861 Census.
Anyway, sometime between the 1871 and 1881 Census, he seems to have left the Police and his new job was now: "Butchery Keeper."
Here is Naaman in the 1881 census on Family Search:

Please forgive my ignorance, but does anyone please know what this job would have involved him doing? Was it just something like Butchery Section Manager?
Any information would be gratefully accepted.
Thank you very much.

Butchery is defined as the work of slaughtering animals and preparing them for sale as meat. Therefore I'd say he was in charge of a abattoir.

That 1881 census shows his address as Butchery Street.
There is a thread on RootsChat, from 2009, that has some info:

So, it would seem that Butchery Street consisted of numbers of market stalls, all butchers?
I would therefore hazard a guess that "Butchery Keeper" was a sort of Caretaker, watchman or Supervisor?
In 1881 he would have retired from the Police Force, so a reasonable occupation for him?
In "The History of the County of Lincoln" is a mention:
The Butchery, in Butchery Street, was erected in 1774, at the expense of the corporation, and, though small, is very convenient.

Yes, thank you. Him being some sort of Caretaker or Watchman would seem to make sense.
