Post by: mclachlan on Thursday 30 November 17 22:04 GMT (UK)
Not sure if this has already been mentioned anywhere else but just in case, the directories have been digitized and are now available online!

How do I search for a Family Name or a Street in Richmond in 1912/13?

Click on the directory for the relevant time period.  The go down the left side and click on Alphabetical Index - you should then scroll down the surnames and see the street where they lived.

Well I've been playing with it for hours and I cannot find 1913 at all. The data for 1915 (my Great Grandmother still lived there then) only has 22 pages and no listing for her either. :-\

Searching for Richmond Burnley area for Ellen Clarence.

Ellen CLARENCE was enrolled to vote in 1914 to 1917 in Richmond

Her addresses can be seen digitised on Ancestry.
Is this the information you are seeking?

Hi Sue, I have the Electoral Rolls for her from Ancestry.  I was looking for the addresses she lived in in Richmond and Burnley area for 1913 (they arrived in Australia Nov 1912) till about 1922.  My father told me they moved many times when they couldn't pay the rent.

I could only find a CLARENCE, Geo. H. 152 Gladstone St. S.M. (I assume South Melb.) on page 1490 in the 1915 Sands. To do this I clicked on the 1915 directory, then clicked on Alphabetical on left, then hit the forward button on the top right, then dragged the bar down on the right hand side to get to the only Clarence name in the directory. The system froze a few times.  I think these directories were often incomplete if no one was home when the Sands rep called at the house or was maybe told to mind his own business.

Unfortunately only 1 in 5 of the Sands & McDougall directories from 1860-1940 have been digitized at this stage. It's always the one that you want that is never available isn't it!  I did look in the 1913 electoral roll on Ancestry but there is no mention of the name Clarence for that year. Perhaps if they were moving around for a little while they weren't able to register any permanent address (not sure how things worked in those days!).  Hopefully in time you will be able to find the information you are looking for!

Cheers, thanks Andrea.  I'll wait until the Sands & McDougall directories for the years I want are digitized.
