Title: A Nativity Conundrum
Post by: ciderdrinker on Friday 01 December 17 13:53 GMT (UK)
Hello rootchatters
Perhaps one of you can help me with this little problem.
I have a Walter Barney Seale born in Weobley Herefordshire  Sep 1879.
His mother is given as Williams and he appears with parents John Weale Seale and Rachel Williams married Hereford Mar 1865 on the censuses .
In 1911 he is in Tredegar with his 'wife' Maud nee James.
They have 4 children in Tredegar from 1911-1920 but never marry.

Walter's war record has the birth dates of the children and Maud crossed through as next of kin.
Added is mother Mrs Margaret Walker ,39 Albert st ,Aberdare.
When he leaves the country for Canada in 1922 again next of kin Mrs Walker now of Albert Inn Aberdare.
On his marriage in 1926 mother is again Rachel Williams.

So who is Mrs Margaret Walker?

Rachel is widow  at Tredegar on the 1901 and then disappears. She was born Mar 1841 Hay registration of Llanbedr/Llanstephen Radnorshire .Parents seem to be William Williams and Elizabeth Haynes.

Any one fancy a go at Who is she?

Yes indeed who is Margaret Walker.

Definitely the same Walter Barney Seale on all records you have?

Does date of birth/place etc match in case there are two Walters around.

Well his baptism 28 Sep 1879 gives mother as Rachel.

A family tree names a sister of Walter as Margaret - maybe she married a Walker?  I know she wouldn't be his mother but  :-\

Hard to tell with all the crossings out but doesn't it say "guardian of children"

When did Maud pass away?  Maybe Margaret stepped in to help in a crisis.

Where is Maud before she "married" - maybe it was her mother.

Time for someone else to have a go!

A vague start of a connection?
39 Albert Street is the address of The (Prince) Albert Inn,so the war record and 1922 are the same address.
The landlord of The Prince Albert Inn in 1915 is Harold Knight, who is married to Florence Seale.
As she appears on the 1901 census with Rachel as mother, presumably she is a sister(to Wslter and to Godfrey as well, here head of household).

Roger

There is a much earlier army record for him, it would be interesting to see what he says on that. Unfortunately it is on Fold, a subscription site

It is also on F M P -  It is attestation papers but it appears he was discharged as he made a false declaration about his age.  Mother Rachel, Queens Hotel, Neath

Hello
Thanks for all the replies.
Maud the mother of his children, who I found crossed out on those attestation papers on Ancestry was not his wife but lived until the 1960's.I presume she was crossed out when he confessed they weren't married.
Florence is indeed his youngest sister. So I now know there was a connection to that address and he didn't just make it up.Thank you for that!
Good spot that earlier military record as well.I wouldn't have thought to look for the earlier document.
It really is curious.
I know his sister Margaret Louisa  (born 1879) married and Augustus Morgan Bennett in 1907 in Trevethin. Obviously finding her after that becomes a bit of a problem.I'm assuming she died in Merthyr Tydfil in 1931 but if so that rules her out of being the  Mrs Walker .

This  is a knotty one

Is there any possibility the name given is Margaret Walter(s)?
It may be  quite a coincidence but in the 1901 census there is a David and Margaret Walters at the Gadlys Arms in Glycorrrwg,Neath and if you look for this couple(mis-transcribed as Walkers?) in 1911 they are at an address posssibly associaed wth Rachel.

Of course it could be that he was just asked for a contact and he gave Margaret's name and "mother" was just added by someone who assumed that is who she was.

Did he stay with Maud or did they split up and that is why her name was crossed out?
