Title: James Steele (1827-1897) + Mary Young (1827-1899)
Post by: ndhubbard on Sunday 03 December 17 03:26 GMT (UK)
Hello all,

I'm looking for helping with leads on the families of James Steele (1827-1897) and Mary Young (1827-1899) in Scotland.  The couple had emigrated to Canada, were married, and living in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, by 1861 (when they start appearing in census records there).  I have found a marriage record for James Steele & Mary Young from 20 Dec 1846 in Haddington, East Lothian, but I'm not sure if it's the correct couple.  The only other potential clues are 1) the fact that some census and marriage records list their birthplaces as England instead of Scotland, and 2) a death certificate for their daughter Elizabeth Steele Jackson from Dec 1936 that lists her mother as Mary Grey instead of Young.

I'm hoping to find information on their parentage to begin researching the lines further in Scotland.

Thank you for your help!

The couple married in Haddington in 1846 are not yours. The marriage lists them as James Steel and Maria Young. The IGI lists children Thomas Robertson, 1855; Sarah Ann, 1857; Maria, 1860; Robert, 1862 and Isabella, 1865, the first two born in Haddington and the rest in Galashiels. In the 1881 census there is a family consisting of James Steel, 62, born Northumberland; wife Maria Steel, 57, born Edinburgh; son Thomas Steel, 26, born Haddington; and daughter Isabella, 16, born Galashiels. I can't find them in 1871, but they were in Haddington in 1861 and 1851. It would be easy to check by looking at Thomas' birth certificate, which will contain the date and place of his parents' marriage.

What records have you been able to find in Canada, other than the census? Marriage record? Baptisms of children? What were the names and approximate birth years of the children?

There is a birth on Scotlands People for a James Steel, baptised 22.06.1827 in Glasgow with the parents James Steel and Mary Young.  Could it be that the family have Mary Young slipping a generation down the tree?

Those death records are indeed James & Mary.  Their grave, in Ontario, gives Mary's maiden name as Young.

All of their children, except their first (Jane), were born in Ontario according to the census records (I have not seen birth records for any of them).  They were also all marred in Ontario (their marriage records all show their parents as James and Mary).

Children (approximate birthdates and accurate marriage dates):
Jane Steele - b. 1853 (m. 1873  Benson Chrysler)
Jessie M Steele - b. 1855 (m. 1871 James Mungo Main)
Mary "Mamie" Steele - b. 1857 (m. 1881 James Delmer Mills)
Eliza Steele - b. 1859 (m. 1882 Frederick Elias MacDonald)
James Steele - b. 1864 (m. 1888 Jane Ellen Patrick)
Elizabeth "Lizzie" Steele - b. 1868 (m. 1889 Walter Dixon Jackson)
Isabella Steele - b. 1872 (m. 1889 to John Hamilton Terryberry)

Hi can I confirm they give their religion as church of England on census if so I would be more inclined to be looking at England rather than Scotland

My 3xgt aunt and family emigrated to Cartwright Durham about the same time and they all state Presbyterian which is the Church of Scotland

And, the 1891 Canadian Census states they are both from England.

I'm not sure why I had their births listed as Scotland, but going back over all the records, it does seem they were born in England and were members of the Church of England.  I'm moving this post out of the Scotland section.  Thank you for your suggestions.
