Title: William Parks & Mary Reed marriage St. Nicholas Brighton Sussex
Post by: fofofo1966 on Sunday 03 December 17 12:40 GMT (UK)
Hello [new here!],
I am looking for the marriage of William Parks & Mary Reed 04-12-1828 St. Nicholas Brighton Sussex in order to find their parents. Any help would be great.
The couple had a son George Reed Parks bap. 26-07-1829 St. Nicholas Brighton & a daughter Emma Elizabeth bap. 1103-1832 St. Nicholas Brighton Sussex. They then moved to Middlesex after the death of George Reed 02-11-1834. They had three other children St. John in Middlesex Finsbury; Henry Thomas bap 02-04-1857 being my direct ancestor.
I am trying to trace this branch of my family.
Kind regards from The Netherlands. :)

Unfortunately this is before marriage registration started in 1837. Parish records before that rarely give parents names ( and certainly not mother's names) - just the bride, groom and witnesses.

Do you have them in the 1851 census which would give places and dates of birth as a starting point?

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat

They seem to be in Islington in 1841, with William a bit older than Mary. Did William die in Islington in 1846, age 54? I'm not sure!

Marriage witnesses in Brighton - one I can't make out what the name is, the other was R Newman
Outside possibility it might be Robert Newman who married Betsey Read in Brighton in 1823.

Hello John,

Thank you, I did not have it yet, I can now indeed see what you mean with the witnesses. Any idea how to proceed?

I've put my thinking cap on. It's looking a bit of a tricky one.

Is Mary still alive in 1861 - does that give a place of birth?

Hello Groom & John,

I know that Mary was from Sussex, but I do not have a place name. I also know she died after 1851 Census, but have no idea when she died.

I think Mary and family are in Shoreditch (Hoxton) in 1861, recorded as Parker. It's possible it's an s on the end of that name, but more like an r?

Did William die in Islington in 1846, age 54? I'm not sure!

There's a burial at Bunhill Fields
7 June 1846
William Parks
age 55
where brought from - Popham Street (perhaps there's a number there, something 7, partially hidden in the image?)

They were in Popham Street in 1841

Thanks Rosie.
And that was the address in 1861. Why did I say Mount Place?

This is unfortunate.
In the Islington Register of Paupers Settlement, 1828-1848
1846
Parkes William
residence 27 Popham Street
age 54
Married
4 children
Remarks 27 May St Luke

But I can't find the appropriate book on ancestry
The have, in Islington settlement papers
Rough examinations book, 1844-1846 (goes to March 1846)

and in Islington miscellaneous
Rough examinations book, 1847-1848

The missing book is listed at the LMA
1846 Mar 1847 Feb
Rough examinations book
P83/MRY1/0900

It may contain the answers we need! Or it may not.
Perhaps "St Luke" means that William was considered settled there.

Hello Rosie, John,

Great to receive your wonderful help. I indeed think 1861 in Shoreditch Hoxton is correct;
Mary Parker = Mary Pars nee Reed
Henry parker = Henry Thomas Parks ~ 02-04-1837 Finsbury Middlesex
Wal Parker = Walter John Parks ~ 1840
Emma Parker = Emma Elizabeth Parks ~11-03-1832 Brighton Sussex

Great we have the bural date of William 07-06-1841
It would be great if the in the Islington Register of Paupers Settlement book of 1846 can be found.

Well I hope someone can find that exams book online
LMA says
Not available for general access
available online via ancestry.co.uk
But where?

Since the exam was dated 27 May, and William was buried 7 June, perhaps you shouldn't expect too much from it.
We could do with a death for Mary after 1861.

We could do with a death for Mary after 1861.

This just might be her and daughter Emma in 1871, despite the birthplaces
piece 397 folio 32 page 3
St Luke
123 Central St
Mary Park Head Wid 72 Formerly Laundress, born Mx London
Emma Park Daur Unm 38 Milliner Mx London
Alfd Perry Grandson 6 Mx London

That may seem unlikely, but in 1881 we have -
piece 357 folio 90 page 29
Clerkenwell
Emma Parks Head Wid 49 Dressmaker Sussex Brighton
Alfred Parks Son 15 Porter Middx St Lukes

Emma may be calling herself a widow for appearances perhaps.
There is a birth registration for Alfred Perry/Parks
June 1865 St. Luke 1b 629
Parks, Alfred Perry
mother -

Has the dash for mother's maiden name that usually means illegitimate.

Could he have been baptized as Alfred Percy Parks? 5th April 1868, at Clerkenwell St Paul.
Father given as Alfred, mother Emma. Abode Central Street.
Occupation Milliner!!

If all this is right, then Mary's death is
March qtr 1878 Holborn 1b 550
Parks, Mary
age 79

Burials at City of London & Tower Hamlets Cemetery, 1878
Mary Parks
abode 123 Central Street St Luke
buried Feb 8
age 79 ys

Excellent find John, I could only see Emma with son Alfred on the census after 1871  :)

Thanks Rosie.
Well, Mary is very reluctant to say exactly where she was born.
That's three opportunities she's had!

Hello Rosie & John,
Great that you were able to get more pieces of the puzzle! We now also can deduct that Mary Reed was born in 1799, most likely from Sussex. She died 08-02-1878 Holborn West End London. She got married 04-12-1828 Brighton, Sussex.
As for William we now know that he died  07-06-1846 Islington Middlesex, London [27 Popham Street] and most likely was born 1792 Middlesex, Shoreditch London.
