I’m looking for information about my father’s family. My Father’s name is John Cuthbertson and was born in 1942.

Before we go any further, can you confirm that your father is deceased? It is not Rootschat policy to show details of a living person.
Your first move, unless you have a copy of your fathers birth cert or can get one from a rellie, will be to find his birth in the General Register Office indexes (try FreeBMD site). Hopefully you will then see his mothers maiden name. Look for births of any known siblings too, to help confirm you are on the right track. Then the most reliable thing would be to send for a copy of the cert (£9-25 from www.gro.co.uk), and then to look for a marriage for his parents.

Falling at the first hurdle - I cant see a birth for that name in that year!

Oops sorry! Dad was born on 21/7/1942 in Leicester, but was in Middlesborough up until the 1970’s. He passed away in August this year ☹️

If the above is correct then his mother's maiden name was Sharp. Cannot see any more births for the above marriage. Was you Dad an only child? RootsChat has a living person policy so please do not post any details of any one who is still with us.
