Title: The 1895 marriage of Philip Henry Adams and Sarah Taylor?
Post by: AdamsHodgetts on Monday 04 December 17 16:13 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I have this marriage down because it includes John Billingham Adams, father and Alma, sister of Philip Henry Adams: -

Marriage 18 Aug 1895 St John The Baptist Halesowen
Philip Henry ADAMS 23 B Stock Taker Belle Vale Hawne Father John Billingham Adams Stock Taker
Sarah TAYLOR 22 S The Mount Boro' Father Samuel Taylor Labourer
After Banns/Both Signed
Wit; Samuel Taylor / Alma Adams

and have come across another marriage also during 1895: -

Philip Henry Adams Sep qtr 1895 Stourbridge Worcestershire
Volume   6c Page   207
Household Members
Name   Age
Philip Henry Adams
John Portman
Elizabeth Smith
Sarah Taylor

Are they referring to the same marriage? Not sure why or how John Portman and Elizabeth Smith fit in, if they're not witnesses?

Does anyone know what is S The Mount Boro'?

Thanks

There will be two brides and two grooms and two marriages with the same reference.

The 4 names are arranged alphabetically. It's the same event

This is the same marriage

The index entry gives 4 names, because the Parish Register will have two marriages recorded on each page, thus there will be two marriages with that reference number 8c page 207, in the quarter Jul/Aug/Sep  (which covers the date of the marriage you are interested in) .  The other two names, John Portman and Elizabeth Smith, will be the names of the bride and groom of the other marriage recorded on that same page.

It seems that Sarah Caroline Taylor has left her husband and their two sons, followed her parents and siblings to Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA plus married Lewis Stadelmaier and died on 25 May 1946?

So just when did the middle name for Sarah ( Caroline ) Taylor/Adams come into existence?

She was the first born and christened Sarah Caroline Taylor on 3 April 1871 to Samuel Taylor (16/12/1847 in Cradley - 21/5/1911 in USA) and Delilah Williams (1851 in Cradley - 1913 in USA)

Other children: -

Samuel 1873 -
John Thomas 1875 - 1939
Tamar May 1877 - 1938
Amy Annie 1880 - 1941
Isabela 1881 -

All above were born in Cradley

Last two were born in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA: -

Florence Violet 8/10/1885 - 13/11/1939
Pearl Ameila 7/1/1889 - 10/9/1939

I've come across a Sarah Adams (married) travelling on a ship called Saint Louis from Southampton to New York, arriving on 20 October 1900 so am assuming it is her...?

Hi agree that Philip Henry Adams is married in 1911/1939 he dies 21st March 1953 aged 80, you say Sarah left her children behind, I can only locate a Philip Edwin b 1899 who dies Sept qtr 1977 in Dudley?
The Sarah Adams departing Southampton on the St Louis was with husband Herbert also 30

PS having problems locating 1901 census?

Oh I didn't see the Sarah Adams departing Southampton's husband mentioned but vaguely remember seeing the words travelling with "Uncle" but we don't seem to have a Herbert that could have been her "Uncle" in our family tree. Its the only Sarah Adams I could find and the date seems to fit in...?

Me too, re the 1901 census! I've found my grandfather Arthur John Adams residenting with his grandparents (John Billingham Adams and his wife Emma Cox) on the 1901 census but where is his younger brother Philip Edwin Adams?

My Dad has never known his grandmother Sarah Caroline Taylor/Adams as she was not around during my Dad's time so it seems she has simply disappeared! Which is why I'm trying to trace her as she may have joined her parents and siblings in USA?

? Quite odd, as the Philip Henry Adams on 1911 with son Philip Edwin Adams b c 1900 states he has been married 15 years and has only 1 child born and still alive, Arthur J aged 14 is still with Grandparents in 1911.
The Probate of Philip Henry Adams shows it was handled by Arthur ROY Adams and Philip Edwin Adams?

Philip Henry Adams had two sons, Arthur John Adams and Philip Edwin with Sarah C Taylor/Adams but where is Philip Edwin Adams on the 1901 census? Also Sarah C Adams isn't mentioned on the same censuses as Philip Edwin Adams and both sons in the 1900s...

The probate of Philip Henry Adams was handled by his younger son Philip Edwin and his (Philip Henry's) grandson Roy Adams.  Roy is the son of Philip Henry's older son Arthur John Adams who  wasn't a well man at the time.

This enclosed attachment was the post I came across on Ancestry.com, which was linked to my Sarah Caroline Adams nee Taylor by jhog952 that started me searching for Sarah Caroline again as I do so much want to solve this mysterious disappearance of her.  Same father: Samuel Taylor

This is as close although I have her christening date down as 3 April 1871 at St Peter's Church, Cradley, Halesowen, Worcestershire and jhog952 has hers down as 29 May 1870.

I would appreciate your thoughts on this... is it purely coincidental or what?

That's the problem, isn't it. The one in Illinois (arriving in NY as "Carrie TAYLOR" in 1882) can't be the same person as the wife of Philip Henry ADAMS.

Or have I missed something?

Have you discounted the following
1901 census Cradley Worcs.
Elizabeth Tayler 34 born Lye Worcs
Sarah Adams 28 listed as single and her sister in law
There are other children but significant is Annie aged 14 days.
Would Sarah have gone to help out with other children and birth of Annie.

Last census Cradley Heath Staffordshire
Sarah Adams age 39 brick yard worker born Cradley is a boarder with William Worton and his wife
says she is married though number of years is missing  children 3-2-1.

I think amondg has come up with your Sarah:

GRO Births:
TAYLOR, SARAH       mmn SOUTHWELL
GRO Reference: 1873  J Quarter in STOURBRIDGE  Volume 06C

The Sarah Caroline TAYLOR (aka Carrie) who went to USA in 1882 with her parents married William MURDOCK and then as a widow, married Lewis S. So,nothing to do with the one who married Philip ADAMS.

Sarah C Taylor/Adams hasn't got any sister in law named Elizabeth in UK. All of Sarah's brothers and sisters have already moved and are living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois by 1901.

I did look at Sarah Adams age 39 brick yard worker as that may be a possibility although she only had two sons, Arthur John Adams (15 JUNE 1896 - 22 MAY 1966) and Philip Edwin Adams (17 AUG 1899 - 27 SEP 1977) and no information has come to light over the one child who has died apart from this 1911 census.

Looking at the records: -

I have Sarah's mother Delilah Taylor nee Williams arriving New York on a ship called Erin from Liverpool on 11 Nov 1882, her father Samuel Taylor was already in USA in 1881 just after his British 1881 census and her name is on the bottom the page then on the next page are her children: -

Carrie Taylor (Sarah C) age 10
Samuel - cannot make out age
John age 5
Tamar age 4
Anny (Amy Annie) age 3
Infant (Isabela)

Now I can see what you mean, Maureen, re SarahC/Carrie can't be the same person as the wife of Philip Henry.

I wonder if they, the family, travel backwards and forwards between UK and USA?

I currently have: -

Samuel Taylor (16/12/1847 in Cradley - 21/5/1911 in USA)

married

Delilah Williams (20/12/1851 in Rowley Regis - 28/5/1913 in USA)

Children: -

Sarah Caroline Taylor Birth - registered in Stourbridge during 1870, christened at St Peter's, Cradley on 3 April 1871
Samuel - (1875, Cradley - 4/1/1927 in USA)
John Thomas - (1875, Cradley - 30/8/1939 in USA)
Tamar May - (1877, Cradley - 25/8/1877 in USA)
Amy Annie - (1880, Cradley - 17/4/1941 in USA)
Isabela - 1881 in Cradley - ?
Florence Violet - born in USA  (8/10/1885 - 13/11/1939 in USA)
Pearl Ameila - born in USA (7/1/1889 - 10/9/1939 in USA)

Then I have a marriage for

Philip Henry Adams age 23, Stock taker Vale Hawn
Father: John Billingham Adams, Stock taker

marrying on 18 August 1895 at St. John's Church, Halesowen to

Sarah Taylor age 22, The Mount Boro' (the name sound American)
Father: Samuel Taylor, Labourer
After Banns/Both Signed
Wit; Samuel Taylor / Alma Adams (sister of Philip Henry)

My head is thumping from having to recheck, searching for more information - so hard when she seems to have totally disappeared prior to 1901 census, which seems to tie in with the fact she may have left her husband and 2 sons to be with her family in USA and remarrying over there. My Dad remembers his Grandad, having lived with him and great Uncle and has often wondered what became of his Grandmother Sarah Taylor...

The Adams family did own 50, Windmill Hill and the building used to be a pub. It belonged to Philip Henry Adams then Roy Adams who sold it in the late50s/early 60s.

I'll need to look for 1901 census but the family, you are referring to, must have lived in a different building on the same road called Windmill Hill?  I haven't come across an Elizabeth Taylor born in 1859 yet and I'm not having much luck in finding any more info on  the parents, Samuel and Mary A Taylor using the search facility - think I need more keywords?

So I have the wrong family from Censuses 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 in my previous message?

I'm now confused as I thought I was looking for a Samuel Taylor, father of Sarah Taylor with a brother also named Samuel as both Samuel and Alma (Philip Henry Adams' sister) were witnesses at the marriage of Sarah and Philip's wedding at St. John's, Halesowen in order to find the correct Sarah Taylor?

As you mentioned somewhere on here that Sarah Taylor worked as a servant at The Mount Boro' so seeing that she would have been 18 years old, Sarah may be listed under The Mount Boro' employer on the 1891 census?

So sorry I have looked again but I can't see where or how the Cook Family fits in as don't see them on the 1881 Census?

I don't know how to link them up as when I click on their names, it doesn't show their partners or any extra information. I've also typed in John W, Winnell or Whinnell Taylor in my search box on ancestry.com and nothing... but there is a John Winnell. So frustrating so I think I'll have to leave it till I'm able to have a full day to travel plus spend the day at the Black Country Family archives in Tipton and ask for help/guidance on how to research the family tree.

Anyway thank you for going to all the trouble and I will keep the link to this post so I can use it when I'm at Tipton archives centre and ask someone there to show me how it all works, how to link them, etc...

Thank you for confirming. I have come across the 1951 census with Samuel's father William listed as coming from Chowbent Lane and the only Chowbent I can find via Google Maps is in Manchester. Is this correct?

Regarding Sarah Adams nee Taylor, as I cannot find her on the 1921 census, am assuming she has either moved away or has died? I have come across the below death records of a Sarah Taylor but the registration district is Bromsgrove?: -

Name:   Sarah Adams
Estimated Birth Year:   abt 1873
Registration Year:   1914
Registration Quarter:   Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at Death:   41
Registration district:   Bromsgrove
Parishes for this Registration District:   View Ecclesiastical Parishes associated with this Registration District
Inferred County:   Worcestershire
Volume:   6c

I'm now speculating that Sarah may have ended up at Barnsley Hall Hospital but I have no way of proving this as I don't have access to Volume: 6c and page 245?

You would need to apply for the death certificate from the qtr, year, volume and page.

www.gro.gov.uk is the cheapest place to place your order

Hi,

Agree if/but/maybes.... I'm just speculating at this point as seeing on the 1911 census that Sarah appears to have had 3 children, 2 sons Arthur John and Philip Edwin and lost one child plus ended up as a Border to William Worton. She hasn't lived with her husband Philip Henry Adams for many years plus has moved from one place to another so am wondering that she may have suffered some kind of depression after the loss of her child? I can't find records for the deceased child, which doesn't help either...

My Dad was surprised when I showed the 1911 census to him as he knew nothing about the 3rd child.

Not sure if Eric is the third brother of Arthur John and Philip Edwin Adams? Their mother Sarah was living at her sister in law's on the 1901 Census... so it looks like she moved out sometime between the birth of Philip Edwin in 1899 and the 1901 census?

Yes I saw that one but don't think it is our Sarah as Philip Henry Adams was still alive then... Philip Henry Adams passed away on 21 March 1953.

Wonder if Sarah is on the 1951 Census?

How can Samuel Taylor be William Cox's brother in law? As far as I can see from my family tree, none of William's sisters have married a Samuel Taylor? Samuel Taylor was William Cox's nephew Philip Henry Adams' wife Sarah Taylor's father....

However I have found two William Cox born during the year 1842 in Stourbridge (Jan-Feb-Mar) & (Oct-Nov-Dec) Neither mention the parents and one in Halesowen, the latter whose parents are Edward and Ann Cox.

Do you have William Cox's date of birth or baptism?

Ah, not the right one then as father is Edward  Cox not Edwin.  Didn't realise Thomas Cox was born on 10 July 1838 as I put that down as baptised.  Will have a look at the graves at St Peter's next time I go. Whereabouts is it?

I've just seen a list of William Coxes immigrating to USA so wondering how you chose this one and whether it's the correct William Cox hence the confusion over brother in law? He would have been immigrating there for his son Philip Wilfred Cox's wedding?

I've lost the plot on this thread. Sorry.

Just to note that the William COX arriving on the Ivernia Mar 17 1903 is listed on Ancestry as William CON. I'm terrible at reading the manifests.

The Samuel TAYLOR living at 291 Caldwell St 1900 census - born Dec 1855 England -Pittsburgh Ward 13, Allegheny, Pennsylvania looks like the "relative".
Don't get the connection, though. Samuel married Mary Ann CHANCE June Qtr 1875 Stourbridge.

That's it for me. ;)

Solomon is a mystery! :o  He was on the two Census records along with his siblings under their parents: Edward Harris and Ann Cox but I cannot find his birth, his baptism or his death! ???

At present I have: -

Ann Cox born on 17 September 1814 to John and Sarah Cox of Cradley and baptised on 19 February 1815 who married Edward Harris (1813 - 1895) on 28 July 1833 at Dudley.

I found their children via census records:-

Mary Ann  Baptised: 23 March 1834 - 1842
Louisa  1836 or 1838 - ?
Selina  Baptised: 14 Oct 1838 - 1929 (Born 1838 Sept Quarter Volume 18 Page 140)
Simeon 1840 - ?  (Born 1840 Sept Quarter Volume 18 Page 421)
Solomon 1846 or 1848 - ?
Caroline 1847 - ?  (Born 1847 Dec Quarter Volume 18 Page 448)
Martha 1849 - 1849 (Born 1849 Sept Quarter Volume 18 Page 434)
James 1853 - ?  (Born Sept Quarter Volume 06C Page 139)
Priscilla 1855 - ? (Born J Quarter 1855 Volume 06C Page 170)
Mira/Myra 1858 - 1942 (Born M Quarter 1858 Volume 06C Page 188)

Looking for records via GRO at the Family Tree Centre, have found more children born to Ann Cox and Edward Harris: -

Emma Matilda born 1841 Sept Quarter Volume 18 Page 431
Cornelius Harris born 1842 December Quarter Volume 18 Page 420
Baby (not named) born 1844 Sept Quarter Volume 18 Page 430

Thank you for that snippet. It's a possibility but unfortunately I cannot find a birth for Solomon unless one of the below children was renamed Solomon?  Also there is a un-named baby born 1844 1844 Sept Quarter in Stourbridge Union Volume 18 Page 430 listed under the Gender: Female!

Boys that were born but not seen on the Census with their families:-

I should have doubled checked the 1861 Census before replying to your query above as it turned out that it may not be the same person as Solomon is actually included on the 1861 Census with the rest of the family: -

Name Solomon Harris
Age 13
Estimated Birth Year 1848
Relation Son
Father's Name Edward Harris
Mother's Name Ann Harris
Gender Male
Where born Cradley, Worcestershire, England
Civil parish Cradley
Ecclesiastical parish Halesowen
County/Island Worcestershire
Country England
Registration district Stourbridge
Sub-registration district Halesowen

Name Age

Edward Harris
Ann Harris

Mary Ann Harris
Solomon Harris
Caroline Harris
James Harris
Priscilla Harris
Myra Harris
Edwin Harris (Illegitimate Grandson)

Just a thought as I may be speculating but wondering that it may possibly be a case of mistaken identity and also another reason why William Garnett Harris isn't included on the Census with his family - that he is actually the one in a Pauper Lunatic Asylum on the 1861 Census?

Name William Garnett Harris
Registration Year 1844
Registration Quarter Apr-May-Jun
Registration district Stourbridge

Also his death at age 25 years: -

This is the marriage from Free BMD
1903
HARRIS   Cornelious   BERRILL   Annie   Blackheath, St Paul   Dudley Register Office   012/004/41

I cant see any census for him, he would have been old when married.

There is an article in The Edinburgh Gazette August 19 1904

Bankrupts
Cornelius Harris, Compton Road, Cradley Heath in the County of Stafford, Chain and Anchor Manufacturer.

Thanks and he's not our Cornelius Harris, son of Edward Harris and Ann nee Cox. Think I will leave this till next time I go to the Family Centre as I'm unable to search some articles, etc via Family Search here and concentrate on other members of the family.

Dad vaguely remembers his Uncle Edwin visiting his mother, Sarah Adams nee Taylor at Barnsley Hall Hospital and think she died there after Philip Henry Adams passed away, in 1950s. Sarah ended up there as she had nowhere to live and couldn’t afford renting. Will look up her death in 1950s.

Had computer problems earlier on as it crashed! Thank you and yes that is the only one I have come across on the Search the Gro Online Index but it only goes up to 1957. The birth year is wrong but that is the nearest plus Dad did say he remembered his Uncle Edwin visiting Bromsgrove to see his mother and that she must have passed away not long after his Grandad.

I will now order a death certificate for this Sarah Adams and hope that it will be the correct one.
