Hello
I am trying to find the Cemetery in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland. I have that it is called simply, Keith Cemetery, but when I try looking it up under that name all I find is the Keith Cemetery in Keith, Moray, Scotland. Does the Cemetery in Keith, Banffshire have a different name?
Another ancestor is supposedly buried at the Keith Old Cemetery in Keith, Banffshire, not sure if it is the same cemetery as I mentioned above or if there are 2 cemeteries in Keith, Banffshire.

Keith, Banffshire and Keith, Moray are the same place.

Keith (Scottish Gaelic: Baile Chèith, or Cèith Mhaol Rubha (archaic)) is a small town in the Moray council area in north east Scotland. It has a population of 4,734.
Until 1975 it was in Banffshire, a name which persists in common usage and historical references.
There are two cemeteries in Keith. Keith Old Cemetery and Broomhill Road Cemetery.
I have access to the burial records for Keith Old Cemetery.

So I'm almost positive Isobel, Helen and Margaret will be in the Keith Cemetery. I am unsure about the parents and son John. I'm hoping to find these graves to help verify dates, even if it's only the year of death.
None of these are on Find a Grave and I don't know of any other web site for looking up international grave sites. I live near Seattle, WA USA and can't afford to travel at this time.

I can't see anything for parents William and Marjory. The records I have start in 1829.
The rest of them are all in the same very large plot which looks to have 47 people buried in it.

There are two burial grounds in Keith.
One is the Old Cemetery, which is one the bank of the River Isla between Old Keith and Fife-Keith. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4089091
The other is the much newer Broomhill Cemetery, beside the road to Banff on the north-eastern outskirts of the town. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/747597
All gravestone inscriptions in the present Moray local authority area were surveyed in 1978-1979, and this information is a large part of the data in LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp
There is a project to add to LIBINDX all records of burials in both, but this is as yet incomplete.
There is also a kirkyard at Drummuir in the parish of Botriphnie http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/7016, but this is obviously not in the town or parish of Keith, even though its postal address nowadays includes Keith as the post town.
Keith is in the historic county of Banffshire, which still exists for ceremonial purposes, but for modern local government purposes it is part of Moray, along with about two-thirds of the parishes of Banffshire. The other Banffshire parishes now come under Aberdeenshire.

I wanted to Thank you again for the list for the John Fraser. Section Number on Plan 212 in the Keith Graveyard. I found all but 3 of the Fraser's on the list, in my tree. The 3 I could not find were children and it's hard to match when you don't have a birth date or a parents name. But I also found several other people I wasn't expecting. I know there are more Fraser's buried in the Keith Graveyard then is on the list but I don't need exact location like Section Numbers. It's just wonderful knowing where they are interned so if I ever get the chance to visit Scotland, I will know where to visit.
To make it easier for other researchers I have added memorials for all those I found on Findagrave.com, it's a wonderful genealogical tool, especially when people add Bio's for the ancestor.

Hi there, I stumbled into this thread/forum and am hoping you might be able to help me as well. I'm trying to track down my great great great grandfather's burial information, which I believe is in the Old Keith Cemetery. His name was William Burgess (1819-1892) and he was married to Margaret Ann Hendry (1825-1893). They had ten children and several lived their whole lives I believe in Keith. By any chance can you confirm that this is where they are buried? Are there other Burgess or Hendry names there as well? Thank you so much for any input you can offer!

William Burgess was the brother of my great-great-grandfather. I have a lot of information about the family.
Once you have made 3 posts on the forum we will be able to contact one another direct to exchange notes.
William and Margaret Ann are indeed in Keith Old Cemetery, and so are their children Isabella, Catherine, Elspet, and Elizabeth. Jane and Anna are in Broomhill Cemetery, Keith. Alexander and William are in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York. Helen and Margaret are also in America but I don't know where.

Steven and Forfarian, this is amazing! Thank you so much! Forfarian mentioned several of the Burgess family (children of William and Margaret's) in the reply below... I don't want you to double up on time spent. I would be curious if John Burgess (1798-1871) and/or Elspet Young Burgess (1796-1838) are there as well... it looks like John also died in Keith. He was William's father. I really appreciate the information. It makes me realize how small the world is :)

Steven, this is my family and I have all that information about them and more, including every available birth/baptism, banns/marriage, death/burial and census record.
You are more than welcome to look it all up, and it's very kind of you to do so, but be please be aware that any information you look up about Burgess and related families in Keith and vicinity will duplicate what I have already done.

This is an extract from my notes about Elspet Young:
When exactly did Elspet Young die? The Keith burial records say 8 March 1837 but this is impossible as her youngest child was born on 27 July 1837. So is this a different Elspet Young, or an error in the Keith parish register?
John Burgess and Isabella Ingram were summoned before the Kirk Session in October 1838, and on 21 October 1838 the Kirk Session decided to await the birth of their child to see whether it was a case of adultery (as opposed to the lesser sin of fornication). So Elspet must have been alive at least nine months before 21 October 1838, therefore she must have been alive in January 1838.
John and Isabella's son George was listed as aged 3 on 6 June 1841. If accurate, this would place his date of birth as between 7 June 1837 and 6 June 1838. This is inconsistent with the Kirk Session record. In 1851 and 1871 his age implies a birth in 1837/1838. However in 1861 he is listed as aged 22, which would give a birth date between 8 April 1838 and 7 April 1839.
I have not found any record of the burial of my great-great-great-grandfather John Burgess, but he has to be in Keith Old Cemetery because in 1871 it was the only burial ground in Keith, where he had lived most of his life.

Which of their children are you descended from?
Because their daughter-in-law Anne Knight (1829-1898), wife of their son William Fraser (1830/1-1908) was my second cousin 3 times removed.

Ah. So we are connected but not related.
William F and Anne K emigrated to New Zealand in 1861 with their three surviving children, and settled in Christchurch. They had five more children there, only one of whom survived to adulthood.
