From GenUKI:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/church_list/GLAMerthyrTydfil
Zoar Welsh Independent Chapel was at High Street, Pontmorlais, Merthyr Tydfil
Ynysgau Independent Chapel was in Victoria Street, Glebeland, Merthyr Tydfil
There are links on that page to the churches.

Thanks K
I have been unable to get an old image of the outside of Zoar. So if you also know if one I would be grateful.

I think this might be it?

Hi Romilly.
Yes I have that image and the inscription at the fascia of the building reads Ynysgau.
That is what is what my question is all about. It does not say Soar or Zoar.
I believe I read that there was division in the congregation and that one chapel begat the other. My question is is this what is known as Zoar or is there another chapel ?
Help

I don't know if this article will be of any help
http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/end-era-zoar-chapel-2125912
snippets from article.........
The doors will finally close at a Merthyr Tydfil chapel to bring to an end its 215 year history.
The congregation of Zoar Welsh Independent Congregational Chapel, which had its beginnings in a pub in the 18th century..........
Formerly listed a Grade 11 building as Capel Annibynwyr Soar-Ynysgau............
-
Good evening,
These were two seperate chapels, one in bridge st and one in the high st as KG said in reply 1.
The Ynysgau chapel in bridge st was demolished in 1966.
The Zoar chapel in the high st is still there, it is a listed building.
If you look at the site " churches of England and Ireland". Go to Methyr Tydfil and scroll down to Zoar chapel you will see a picture of it. Although on the high st it is up a gated alley so can't be seen very well on st view.
When I can get on the laptop later I will put up some links of both chapels. There are pictures of both available online.

Did you follow the links on the GenUKI site I mentioned?
They will take you to:
http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/9874/details/zoar-welsh-independent-chapelcapel-yr-annibynwyr-soar-ynysgau-high-street-pontmorlais
and
http://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/9873/details/ynysgau-independent-chapel-victoria-street-glebeland-merthyr-tudful
There are map references there, as well as Grid references, and links to photos.

Hi K.
Yes thanks and got some maps ..
But starting with everyone's help to put it all together.
Also
Out of curiosity the Crocker from Somerset research ..... is this the Jane Seymour old chestnut that so many believe in ?
Regards
Mlr
-
My paternal grandmother was a Crocker,
I have the line back to Joseph Crocker (b1759), and his father William Crocker (dates not known).
No Seymours in my tree at all?
-
The urban myth Somerset Crocker equals Jane Seymour lineage.
She was related to Crocker line . But ... There is American wishful thinking in that most American Crockers believe they are related to her.
-
Ah! Never heard that before?
But then I don't believe in wishful thinking - only documentary evidence ;D ;D
-
Well done
-
The evidence is convincing enough. Two American academics wrote a book in about 1895 to dispel it.
But it has hung on like Area 51.

Good evening,
Here at last are the links as promised;

http://www.alangeorge.co.uk/SoarChapel.htm
http://www.churches-uk-ireland.org/images/merthyr/merthyr/soar.jpg
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l5x/ Not sure if this one works, you may need to scan round behind you.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01l5y/ The chapel as it is now, the Soar theatre.
John915
Added; 4th link not working properly. Zoom in on high st, you will see Soar theatre and slimming world. theatre is actually where it says slimming world. opposite on map is a blue mark, put your little man on that and see the outside as it is now.

Hi John 915.
Thank you for all your help it is very much appreciated and will make a valued contribution to my research into William Humphrey and his father and grandfather all Williams and deacons of Soar.
Regards
Mike

Is that the William Humphrey appointed deacon by Samuel Evans in 1818?
(Y Tyst, 28 Dec 1894)
-
That's the grandfather of the one I am researching.I have all The Tyst entries for the family. Plus all other entries on the NLW Welsh newspapers online for him......which was lots.
Thanks anyway and if there are any other sources you are aware of I would welcome any assistance you could offer.
Kind Regards

As you say, there is quite a bit available on line at Welshnewspapers online.
Have you checked Welsh Journals on line? Just had a peep but the format has changed (I need to familiarise myself with new navigation process!)
